Incubus Succubus is a pagan rock band formed in the UK in 1989 .

Career

In the summer of 1989 three graphic design students, Tony McCormack, Candia Ridley and Adam Henderson met at the University of Manchester. They all combined an interest in paganism (English paganism from Latin paganus "heathen"), demons , vampires , sorceresses and other occult and supernatural subjects as well as a love of music from bygone eras. So a band emerged from this meeting that was supposed to embody all of this. At first they agreed on the name "Belas Knap", a term from the history of Gloucester . The band's first musical result was the single Beltaine , which also made it onto BBC Radio I.

The initial band name Belas Knap and the Children of the Moon studio project were eventually renamed Incubus Succubus . The term comes from the time of the witch hunt , when the victims were also accused of having sex with the devil . For women, Satan was called Incubus ( Latin for "the one lying above"), while for men it was called Succubus ("the one lying below").

In 1992 the first studio album Belladonna & Aconite was released , the Incubus Succubus , now reinforced by Bob Gardener (bass / drums), earned the reputation of Britain's premier Pagan rock band .

After the 1993 album Wytches , awareness increased rapidly thanks to airplay by the BBC World Service, tours and reviews in Europe, the USA and the Far East. In 1995 Inkubus Sukkubus was signed to the London label Resurrection Records and recorded the most successful album to date, "Heartbeat of the Earth".

"Vampyre Erotica" was released in 1997. The song "Paint it Black" contained on this album caused a sensation in the scene - an idiosyncratic cover version of the famous Rolling Stones title. Another personal highlight for Tony and Candia was the birth of their son Leon.

The strictly limited “Away with the faeries” consisted of an official live recording of some of the highlights of the 1998 UK tour. In March 1999 followed a tour through Germany, France, Great Britain, Belgium and America. Another CD was also released: "Wild". In 2000 the band toured France, Greece and again Great Britain and began recording on the album "Supernature", released in spring 2001.

At the M'era Luna Festival in summer 2001 they played with Marilyn Manson, among others . For the first time, the homepage offered some selected songs (for example an early version of "Burning Times") legally as MP3 for download. As a result, the songs were downloaded over 400,000 times. That steadily increased to 1,500,000 downloads in 2003, making Incubus Succubus one of the UK's most downloaded MP3 bands. In 2005 a big Scandinavian tour was announced; was played in Norway, Sweden and Denmark.
