Earth Crisis is an American hardcore band from Syracuse , New York , which was formed in 1989, disbanded in 2001 and has been active again since 2007.

history

The band was founded in 1989 by Karl Buechner and DJ Rose. Buechner initially planned to play bass, but took over vocals after bassist Ian "Bulldog" Edwards joined the band. When the drummer Mike Ricardi and the guitarists Ben Read and Scott Crouse joined the band, the first appearances followed. In addition, the band recorded a first demo, which they sent to Hardline Records . However, the band could not get a contract with the label, so they released their single All Out War on Conviction Records . This was followed by a first tour of the USA after Dennis Merrick joined the band as the new drummer. With their first demo, the band had also caught the attention of Victory Records , about which the EP Firestorm was released. In addition, All Out War was re-released on this label. Before the release of the debut album Destroy the Machines in 1995, guitarist Ben Read was replaced by Kris Wiechman. This was followed by appearances in Europe , such as at the Dynamo Open Air , followed by concerts in the USA with Ignite , Damnation AD and Guilt . The concerts were followed by another tour together with Shelter . During a trip in the northwestern United States, the band had an accident with their van, with Merrick being so badly injured that a hospital stay was necessary. During his failure, Rose, Ricardi and another friend of the band formed the Path of Resistance project . With the second Earth Crisis album Gomorrah's Season Ends , the band was able to increase its popularity, which allowed the band to take part in the Ozzfest tour. The band then released the live album The Oath That Keeps Me Free in 1997, which the band showed at a concert in their hometown of Syracuse before the band signed a deal with Roadrunner Records . Guitarist Wiechmann has now been replaced by Ian Edward's brother Erick. On the Andy Sneap produced album Breed the Killers was Robb Flynn ( Machine Head ) to hear guest vocals. Various appearances followed the publication, including together with Vision of Disorder in New York. The band separated from Roadrunner Records after the album was released and returned to Victory Records. This label released the album Slither in 2000 , which was produced by Steve Evetts ( Snapcase , Hatebreed ) before the band went on tour with In Flames , which was not financially successful. The compilation , which consisted of demo songs, rare recordings and cover versions, was released in 2001 . After one last appearance at Hellfest in Syracuse, the band broke up that same year.

Buechner then founded the band Nemesis with the Edwards brothers, which was later to be renamed Freya . In early 2007, Earth Crisis was re-formed as part of the line-up before the band broke up. Her first performance took place in Baltimore on January 27th. This was followed by appearances in the USA and Europe, such as at With Full Force 2007 or the French Hellfest ; meanwhile the band worked on new songs. In 2008 the album Breed the Killers was re-released on I Scream Records . After the band signed a contract with Century Media , the album To the Death, produced by Tue Madsen , was released in mid-April 2009 . In the same year the band went on the Hell on Earth Tour with Sworn Enemy , Neaera , Waking the Cadaver , War from a Harlots Mouth , War of Ages and Thy Will Be Done . In 2011 the band again took part in With Full Force. In the same year, the album Neutralize the Threat was released via Century Media .

style

In their songs, the band spoke out against factory farming, alcohol, drugs and meat consumption and for organizations like Earth First! , Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and the Animal Liberation Front (ALF). It is counted as part of the straight edge movement.

According to laut.de , the band already played aggressive hardcore punk in their early days, which dealt with the rejection of drugs, comparable to artists such as Vegan Reich , Statement or Raid . At the EP Firestorm , the group addressed, among other things, the crackdown on drug dealers and animal rights . On Destroy the Machines , the band played a monotonous mixture of hardcore punk and metal, according to Oliver Recker from Metal Hammer . Martin Popoff wrote in his book The Collector's Guide of Heavy Metal Volume 3: The Nineties that the album had strong metal influences and made comparisons with bands like Biohazard , Crowbar and Pantera . At Gomorrah's Season Ends , Robert Müller from Metal Hammer noticed aggressive hardcore punk influences from Metal and noted: "[W] em Biohazard have become too lax, he needs Earth Crisis". Müller described that the band was controversial even in the straight-edge scene and that they "have fewer friends because of their stubborn and provocative nature than the raw quality of their music would suggest". According to Martin Popoff, the cover version of Creams Sunshine of Your Love on the live album The Oath That Keeps Me Free could be heard as a Doom Metal version. On the album Slither , according to laut.de , the band turned a little away from the typical straight-edge topics. Jens Kirsch from the Ox Fanzine also heard influences from Nu Metal on the album . On Breed the Killer , according to Björn Friedetzky from Metal Hammer , the band played “Straight-Edge at its finest”, with sonic parallels to hardcore punk bands like Sick of It All and Unsane . According to Martin Popoff, the influences from metal increased compared to their predecessors, with the group using different styles, such as death metal or heavy metal of the 1980s; he compared the band to downset. According to Dominik Winter from the Ox-Fanzine , the Slither album was much more catchy and harmonious than its predecessor Breed the Killers . According to Elmar Salmutter from Metal Hammer , the album much different from its predecessor, which related mainly to the by Buechner, to Fear Factory was seen reminiscent clear vocals, the hardcore typical in the past Shouting was used. Thorsten Zahn from Metal Hammer described the vocals on the album as a mixture of Gary Meskil ( Pro-Pain ), Lou Koller (Sick of It All) and Ozzy Osbourne . On the compilation Last of the Sane , which only contained cover versions, the band played, according to Thorsten Zahn from Metal Hammer, "rumbling Metalcore ". The album To the Death was dedicated to classic topics such as environmental protection , straight edge, animal welfare and veganism. According to Christian Kruse from Metal Hammer , singer Buechner relied on shouting again and not, as with Slither, on clear vocals and raps . Neutralize the Threat was about groups like the Black Panthers or the fight against drug trafficking in the USA. According to Christian Kruse from Metal Hammer , the sound carrier no longer relies on clear vocals as with Slither , but rather on the genre-typical shouting, as with the previous albums.

The band was described by the Ox-Fanzine as a pioneer of metalcore and in 2007, together with Integrity , counted the band to one of the most important and scene-defining bands in recent years. Martin Popoff also counted the band among the pioneers of metalcore in his review Gomorrah's Season Ends .

Frontman Buechner's veganism was shaped early on by his parents' house, as his grandmother, mother, aunt and sister were already vegetarians . Through pictures of abused animals that he saw in the magazine of the animal welfare organization PETA , he decided to become a vegetarian at the age of 16, before he decided to go vegan at 18.

Various rumors are circulating about the band. One of them says that Earth Crisis are anti-gay. The singer Karl Buechner denied this and referred to the fact that the band's first drummer was homosexual. With regard to the tolerance towards people who are not straight edge, Buechner is now conciliatory: “Many of my friends drink [alcohol], but we have a completely normal relationship. The average straight edger's favorite band is Madball or Sworn Enemy [...] who make no bones about smoking weed or drinking alcohol. [Straight Edger] have no problem accepting people who are different [...] and so are we. "
