Victory Records is a record label from Chicago that the ranges Punk and Hardcore and Metal and post-hardcore specializes. The trademark of the label is a bulldog that adorns the logo.

history

Victory Records was founded in 1989 by Tony Brummel. Among the bands that released on Victory at the beginning of the label's history were Bad Brains and Snapcase . A great success for the label in 1997 was the release of the Hatebreed album Satisfaction Is The Death of Desire , which became the company's most successful release to date. In 2002 part of the label was to be sold to Universal Music , but this failed for financial reasons. Over time, the company grew: the label now has a European representative in London ; In 2004, the Hand Of Hope label from Miami was taken over. In 2005, Victory employed around 40 people, and over 30 albums are released each year. The label made headlines when it initially refused to publish its music on iTunes . In 2006 CEO Brummel changed his mind and albums from his label were available for download. The company also drew attention to itself with several quarrels with bands such as Thursday , Hawthorne Heights , Taking Back Sunday and A Day to Remember , which were caused by a change of label and some were carried out in court .

criticism

Victory Records is occasionally mentioned in the popular debate among punk rock fans about "bad" major labels , as an example of an independent label that shows through its business conduct that not all non-majors are automatically "good". So the band released Good Clean Fun a song called Victory Records Sucks , and the singer of the band The Lawrence Arms , Brendan Kelly, said: "If you need a symbol of all the evil that has gathered in punk rock, would Victory Records' almost perfect for it. They're trying to get the most money out of this scene with incredibly bad bands, and that makes me angry. "

Alexisonfire's George Pettit was also critical in this context: “[...] Look at Hawthorne Heights, which sold 1.5 million records and didn't get a penny from Tony Victory. Understandably they are now saying that Victory Records is a pig shop. and thats the way it is. ".

Publications (selection)

The label's releases also include several parts of a sampler series under the title Victory Style .
