The Lawrence Arms are a punk rock trio from Chicago , Illinois that were founded in 1999 . It is considered the successor to The Broadways, also from Chicago, in which two of today's Lawrence Arms members have played (Kelly and McCaughan). The band takes its name from a dilapidated building on Lawrence Avenue, which is located in the former residential area of Kelly and McCaughan in Chicago and in which they used to live.
occupation
The line-up of Lawrence Arms has never changed over the years, which is rather untypical for punk bands. Since the inception, the band has consisted of Brendan Kelly (bass and vocals), Chris McCaughan (guitar and vocals) and Neil Hennessy (drums).
Singing and lyrics
The vocal interludes are divided between Kelly and McCaughan, each of which has its own style. While Kelly sings the more aggressive and faster songs, McCaughan takes over the somewhat calmer and often more melancholy songs. Oh! Calcutta! breaks with this division by Kelly and McCaughan singing almost all pieces of the album together. The lyrics, by Kelly and McCaughan, are often about alcohol, experiences with their hometown Chicago, or friendship and what goes with it. A trademark are numerous cross-references in pop culture, which even have their own appendix in the booklet for The Greatest Story Ever Told . The album Metropole is a loose concept album and has the lifestyle in a big city as its overriding theme.
Side projects
Kelly and Hennessy are since 2004 in addition to Dan Andriano of Alkaline Trio and the former Rise Against -member Todd Mohney the project The Falcon at which a 5-song EP ( "God do not make no trash -or- Up your ass with broken glass ") released her first regular album (" Unicornography ", without Mohney) on the Red Scare label in September 2006 . In 2016 a follow-up was released ("Gather Up The Chaps") with Dave Haus as the second guitarist. McCaughan also works as a singer / songwriter under the pseudonym Sundowner and makes songs available for auditioning. In spring 2007 his first solo album "Four One Five Two" was released in cooperation with cellist Jenny Choi, also on Red Scare. In contrast to his band colleagues, Hennessy devotes himself more to recording and producing various bands.
