Shelter is an American post-hardcore / melodic hardcore band from New York City .

history

Ray Cappo (2010)

In 1990 Youth of Today broke up. Ray Cappo, singer and lyricist of the group, broke away from the hardcore punk scene, which he, like the straight edge movement, had decisively shaped. He also sold his label Revelation Records and devoted himself exclusively to the Krishna religion. After searching for meaning in an ashram in Vrindavan , he learned the teachings of Gaudiya Vaishnava . Back in Boston he founded the group Shelter, which has existed in various line-ups since 1990.

The debut LP Perfection of Desire was recorded in 1990 with the help of the well-known hardcore producer Don Fury . The album is still very much influenced by Youth of Today and was made with the participation of members of the group 76% Uncertain , with whom Cappo was active as Reflex from Pain in 1983. Tom Capone (guitar), the only new musician, would later be quite successful with Quicksand and Bold . Quest for Certainity (1992) moved a lot in melodic hardcore and in US hard rock . Cappo used more melodic vocals here. With After Forever is also a Black Sabbath - cover represented. With John Porcelly (ex-Youth of Today, Judge ) an old companion joined Cappos Shelter. A US tour with The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Green Day followed the 1993 album Attaining the Supreme .

Mantra was released on Roadrunner Records in 1995 . The album contains both classic hardcore anthems and pop-punk in the style of The Offspring or Green Day. A video of Here We Go Again even aired on MTV . This was followed by a tour with Earth Crisis and one in support of the reformed Sex Pistols . At the latter concerts, which also took place in Germany, shelters were booed and mugs were thrown at them.

A serious traffic accident with her van caused the cancellation of several concerts on a tour in the opening act for No Doubt and Goldfinger . In 1997 Beyond Planet Earth was released , which was even more catchy than its predecessor and brought some ska and industrial elements to the music. The new style of music could not achieve the necessary sales figures and so Shelter had to part with Roadrunner Records again. In 2000 the first self-financed album When 20 Summers Pass was released , which was later reissued by Victory Records (USA) and Century Media (Europe). The album is more oriented towards hardcore again. In 2001, after The Purpose, The Passion , the group broke up, Ray Cappo turned his back on the Krishna faith and tried his hand at being a hardcore singer again with Better Than a Thousand .

In 2006, Good Life Recordings released a reunion album entitled Eternal , which consists of mostly older, previously unreleased songs.
