Equal Vision Records is an American independent label from New York City which was founded by Ray Cappo in early 1990 to release music from bands of the Krishna faith. After the sale to Steve Reddy, the music label mainly has bands from the hardcore punk and alternative rock sectors under contract.

history

In early 1990, Ray Cappo founded the music label Equal Vision Records in Albany to distribute his newly founded band Shelter after his former band Youth of Today had split up shortly before . The aim of the label was to promote music by bands from the hardcore punk with a connection to the Krishna faith, as Ray Cappo had felt drawn to the Hare Krishna movement in the years before and lived according to the rules of the Bhagavad Gita . With the single No Compromise , Shelter's first release on Cappo's own label appeared in the same year, as a result of which the label signed other bands, such as the band 108 founded by Vic DiCara, a former member of Shelter , which signed a new style of music coined, which was summarized under the term Krishna-core . In 1992 Ray Cappo sold the label to his manager Steve Reddy, who was also a supporter of the Krishna movement, after which the label was relocated to New York City . After Reddy had initially decided to only sign bands from the Krishna movement, he also released records by bands outside the movement such as Converge , Bane or Saves the Day .

In July 2009 the label founded the sub-label Mantrology together with the musician Gaura Vani and the film producer Rasa Acharya, on which they only sell bands from the Krishna movement and with which the label got back to its roots. In January 2012, the label moved back to the Sony Music Entertainment belonging Sales Red Distribution , after it previously for a long time in which to Warner Music Group owned sales Alternative Distribution Alliance was under contract. A month later, Max Bemis , singer of the band Say Anything , founded his own label with the name Rory Records under Equal Vision, with whose founding the band Tallheart was signed. In June 2012, the musician Casey Crescenzo, who is under contract with Equal Vision with his solo project The Dear Hunter , also founded his own sub-label, which is called Cave & Canary Goods.
