Max Bemis (born April 6, 1984 in New York City ) is an American musician , singer , songwriter and composer . He is the singer and main composer of the American band Say Anything .

Life

Bemis was born in New York City , but moved his family to Los Angeles , California at a young age . His father worked there as a producer in Hollywood. Through him, Bemis got some minor roles. He was seen as a baby on the movie poster for Raising Arizona or as an extra in In the Body of the Enemy . His musical interest solidified after he learned to play the keyboard. Bemis himself, like other members of Say Anything, is of Jewish descent. In his texts, therefore, religious themes are repeatedly mentioned. After a nervous breakdown in 2005, he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder , which he also deals with musically.

Bemis announced in a 2014 interview that he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. He gave this as a reason for self-medication with marijuana . During the making of the album Is A Real Boy , he experienced a manic episode.

Bemis is married to musician Sherri DuPree Bemis. With her he has two daughters and a son.

In August 2018, Bemis announced that he was bisexual .

Musical career

With the later Say-Anything members Evan Span and Michael Levin, who are also of Jewish origin, Bemis went to the Windward School in Los Angeles . He met the later Say Anything drummer Coby Linder in a Jewish holiday camp. The four formed the band Say Anything. The band's popularity in the Los Angeles area grew and the band produced their first album Baseball after making some line-up changes.

The band broke up when Bemis went to college in New York. However, he was dissatisfied with his student life and decided to start Say Anything again. Coby Linder (drums) and Dan Delauro (bass) were involved with Bemis on the EP Menorah \ Majora 2003. The following year they signed a record deal with Doghouse Records, on which they released in 2004 ... Is A Real Boy . With J Records they covered their own song Alive with the Glory of Love in 2005 , which made them famous and is about Bemis grandparents who survived the Holocaust.
