history
Foundation, record deal and debut album Dear Gd
Being as an Ocean was founded in 2011 in Alpine , California, by singer Joel Quartuccio, guitarists Tyler Ross and Jacob Perst, bassist Ralph Sica and drummer Shad Hamawe. Quartuccio, Hamawe, Tyler Ross and Ralph Sica played between 2005 and 2011 in the now defunct black metal band Vanguard , which released a total of three albums.
On June 28, 2012, the band was signed to InVogue Records and released their debut album, Dear Gd , recorded by Brian Hood in San Diego on October 23, 2012. It rose to number 27 on the US Heatseeker chart. American music magazine Billboard .
In March 2013, the group toured for the first time in Europe . Being as an Ocean played together with Napoleon in Germany , Sweden , the United Kingdom , Poland , Austria , Slovenia , Italy , France , Belgium and Switzerland . Between May and June 2013, the group toured Canada with Liferuiner on 13 shows . In August the band went on a concert tour in Australia for the first time . Sierra acted as the opening act . A second concert tour followed in September through the European continent. The Elijah and Capsize played as opening acts . Most of the tour took place in Germany and the UK. Further appearances during the tour were in Belgium, Austria and the Netherlands . In October and November 2013, the group supported Expire and For the Fallen Dreams as the opening act for Senses Fail on their USA concert tour. In 2013, Shad Hamawe and Jacob Perst left the group for unknown reasons. The other musicians looked for a replacement in several open castings before Connor Denis - formerly active in Sleep Patterns - was accepted into the band as the new drummer. Michael McGouch was added to the group as the new rhythm guitarist. He previously played in the band The Elijah.
Second album: How We Both Wondrously Perish
In February and March 2014, Being as an Ocean toured Europe again and played songs from their new album, which was announced for 2014. The band could be seen together with Hundredth , Counterparts and Polar . The performances took place in Germany , Austria , Belgium , Poland , France and Italy . Right before this concert tour, the band could be seen supporting August Burns Red in the UK.
On February 25, 2014 the group announced that the new album How We Both Wondrously Perish was called, on May 6, 2014 it was released. In Europe the album was released via Impericon Records . In the USA, the album made it to number 55 in the album charts . In June and July 2014 the group will tour Europe again. The performances take place in Germany, Belgium, France, Italy, Austria, Switzerland , the United Kingdom , the Netherlands , the Czech Republic , Slovenia and Slovakia . During this tour, the band played at several music festivals, including With Full Force , Summerblast Festival and Mighty Sounds Festival . Being as an Ocean are occasionally accompanied by Hundredth, Letlive , Of Mice & Men , Memphis May Fire , Stick to Your Guns and Rotting Out .
In July and August 2014, Being as an Ocean toured the United States and Canada as the opening act for Hundredth . They were accompanied by Counterparts , My Iron Lung , Capsize and Handguns . The concert tour included 26 concerts. Another concert tour through North America followed in September and October 2014. This time Being as an Ocean play with Fit for a King , Gideon , Wolves at the Gate and again with Capsize. In November 2014 the band could be seen again in Europe. The melodic hardcore band Vanna was there .
Third album: Being as an Ocean
On January 10, 2015, the band began work on their third studio album. Three days earlier, on January 7, 2015, the group was announced for the full Warped Tour , which will take place between June and August 2015. Before that, the group did a European tour in April and May 2015 as the opening act for Stick to Your Guns and Deez Nuts . Before this tour, Being as an Ocean will be completing a concert tour through Australia as a support for Architects . Before the Australia tour with Architects, the group played a Southeast Asia tour with stops in Thailand , Singapore and Hong Kong .
On May 7, 2015, the group released Little Richie, the first song from the third album, which was named after the band itself. The album was released on June 30, 2015 via InVogue Records . The album was produced by Matthew McCellan at Glow In The Dark Studios and mastered by Kris Crummett . The album was first listed outside of the United States. The album entered the German album charts at number 56 on July 10, 2015 .
From November 6th to 28th, 2015, the band toured as part of Never Say Die! Tour with Burning Down Alaska , Cruel Hand , Fit for a King , Defeater and The Amity Affliction through Europe . Even during the Never Say Die! Tour, drummer Connor Denis announced via Instagram that he was leaving Being as an Ocean in order to be able to work as a session musician in the future. Between February 29 and April 2, 2016, the band will play a concert tour through the United States as a support act for Silverstein . This tour will be accompanied by Emarosa and the Japanese metalcore band Coldrain . Immediately afterwards, the band plays another concert tour through the United States, which is accompanied by Capsize . Concerts in Europe follow in June and July, again with Silverstein.
Change to Equal Vision Records, disputes and a new album
On February 25, 2016, Being as an Ocean signed a recording deal with Equal Vision Records . On the same day, the single Dissolve was released. The group worked on this song for almost four months. At the end of 2016, Waiting for the Morning to Come was announced for a release in early June 2017. However, the album was not released on the day announced. A week later, the band changed the release period from June 9, 2017 to summer and asked fans to send questions about the album to their label. In July it was revealed that the group and their label are in a dispute over licensing the music. In mid-August, the band announced that they had bought themselves out of the record deal with Equal Vision Records and that they wanted to self-publish the album. Waiting for the Morning to Come was first published digitally on September 9, 2017; a physical release on CD and vinyl will take place on November 3rd of the same year.
Musical influences and band name
Music genre
The group's music is influenced by groups like Mewithoutyou , Oceana , As Cities Burn , Underoath , Sigur Rós, and Balance and Composure . According to Metal Hammer , the group tries to "build a bridge between post-hardcore , screamo , metalcore and sometimes also pop ", which is reflected, among other things, with "clear vocal lines and sedate ambient passages". The sound of the group on the second long player also seems more compact and harder compared to the debut Dear Gd . The music is comparable to Close Your Eyes and No Bragging Rights . With Being as an Ocean, the hardcore riffing largely takes a back seat.
Song lyrics
The lyrics of the band are written by singer Joel Quartuccio himself and are mostly about his own life. It is striking that some text passages in most pieces are performed as spoken chants . According to the party failure , the group's lyrics also have a Christian touch.
Band name
The musicians were inspired by a saying by Gandhi for their band name. This saying read:
"You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is like an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty. "
Position on Christianity
Singer Joel Quartuccio does not describe Being as an Ocean as a Christian band, although he is a devout Christian himself. He supports the LGBT community and stated in an interview with the German FUZE Magazine that homosexual people “can love Christ and live a Christian life”. He sees homosexuality as innate and not a sin.
