As Cities Burn (ACB) is an indie band from Baton Rouge , Louisiana, founded in 2002 . They broke up in 2009 for family reasons, but announced on Facebook in 2011 that they would reunite.

history

The Beginnings and Son, I Loved You At Your Darkest (2002-2006)

As Cities Burn was founded in 2002 by the brothers TJ Bonnette (vocals) and Cody Bonnette (guitar) together with Colin Kimble (lead guitar), Pascal Barone (bass) and Bryan Disxon (drums). Right from the start, the band was able to earn a status in the live scene in Baton Rouge and at the end of 2002 released an extended play consisting of five songs in their own production, which sold around 1000 times. Another self-titled EP was released in mid-2003, which sold even more often. The band members then quit their jobs and played 250 shows in the United States in 2004 alone. However, Brian Dixon left the band to continue with Oceans Firing . Aaaron Lunsford joined the band for him.

This huge success, especially for a Christian band, drew the attention of Solid State Records , a subsidiary of Tooth & Nail Records , which they signed in 2004.

Their debut album Son, I Loved You at Your Darkest , was released there on June 21, 2005 , the sound of which was primarily influenced by post-hardcore . The vocal focus was on TJ Bonnette's screams. All in all, the album had a very dark, dramatic and melancholy sound. The song The Widow , which is mainly dominated by Cody's vocals, gave a first clue of what As Cities Burn would sound like after TJ left.

Hiatus and Come Now Sleep (2006-2009)

On June 10, 2006, the band announced the end of As Cities Burn. The main reason for a breakup was the exit of the singer TJ Bonnette, who got married and therefore did not want to tour for that long. After the Vans Warped Tour they played their farewell concert at the House of Blues in New Orleans , but after massive support from their fans decided to continue. Cody Bonnette then took over the vocals and the band continued as a group of four.

On December 17, 2006, the band released the first new song from their upcoming album via MySpace and PureVolume, which they recorded in early 2007. Fans were particularly surprised by the complete abandonment of screams, which until then had been a central element of their music and have now been replaced by Cody Bonnette's clear vocals. On April 12, 2007, As Cities Burn released the title of their new album, Come Now Sleep , which was also released on August 14, 2007 via Tooth & Nail Records. It peaked at number 135 on the US Billboard charts.

In 2009 the album Hell or High Water was released , which again included a change of style. The band was now more oriented towards alternative rock, some songs were reminiscent of Pearl Jam and Counting Crows . The album reached number 109 on the Billboard charts. Shortly afterwards the band broke up.

Various reunions (since 2011)

The band has been active again since 2011 and played various concerts, some only with individual albums. In 2015 TJ Bonnette also returned to the band. In the same year, Prince of Planet Earth was released , the first song they had together in six years. This was followed by a tour for the first album, on which the group was supported by Emery .

In 2016 the band broke up again for a short time, only to announce another tour with Emery in January 2017.

style

In the course of the albums their style developed significantly, from an initially more Screamo- influenced post-hardcore ( Son, I Loved You At Your Darkest ) to a more progressive, but calmer variety ( Come Now Sleep ) to indie rock ( Hell or High Water ). Although they belong to Christian Rock, their Christian messages are rather subliminal and are not the sole focus.
