Counting Crows is a rock band founded in San Francisco in 1991 , which achieved great popularity, especially after the release of their debut album August and Everything After with the hit Mr. Jones in 1994. Their style of music is often referred to as melancholy folk rock .
origin of the name
The band name Counting Crows comes from an English counting rhyme that is sung in the song A Murder Of One on the album August and Everything After :
Well I dreamt I saw you walking up a hillside in the snow
Casting shadows on the winter sky as you sat there, counting crows
One for sorrow, two for joy
Three for girls and four for boys
Five for silver, six for gold
Seven for a secret never to be told.
In this case, counting crows ( "crow's count") is shown as a particularly useless employment. Singer Adam Duritz said that names are interchangeable and worthless.
history
Singer Adam Duritz (born August 1, 1964 ) and guitarist David Bryson (born October 5, 1961 ) met through the musician David Immerglück , who is very well known in San Francisco . In August 1991 they recorded together with Matt Malley (born July 4, 1963 , bass), Charles Gillingham (born January 12, 1960 , keyboards) and Steve Bowman (born January 14, 1967 , drums) a demo tape, which is today under the Name Flying Demos is known.
After further appearances in San Francisco, there were various offers from record companies, from which Geffen Records was awarded the contract under the condition of the band that the recordings for August and Everything After could be recorded without any time pressure in a house rented for this purpose. The album was released on September 14, 1993 and achieved seven-fold platinum status by 1996 . The Rolling Stone called August and Everything After "one of the best rock albums of 1993".
Shortly after the release of the debut album, guitarist Dan Vickrey (born August 26, 1966 ) joined the band. After an extensive tour and a. Through Europe there was a break with drummer Steve Bowman, who was replaced by Ben Mize (born February 2, 1971 ).
On October 8, 1996, the second album, Recovering the Satellites , was released by Gil Norton .
From July to November 1997, the Counting Crows toured the United States . The last show on November 6th at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom was recorded for MTV's Live at the Ten Spot . Before that, on August 12th, the band recorded the VH-1 Storytellers in New York's Chelsea Studios . The two live recordings were released together on Across A Wire / Live in New York City on July 14, 1998.
Work on the third studio album began in August 1998. This Desert Life was also recorded in a house in the Hollywood Hills and was released on November 2, 1999. The song Colorblind also appeared on the soundtrack of the film Ice Cold Angels .
After extensive tours through the USA in summer 1999 and 2000 and two European tours in autumn 1999 and spring 2000, the Counting Crows paused in 2001. They then began work on their fourth studio album, which was on July 9, 2002 under the title Hard Candy appeared. Among other things, the song Big Yellow Taxi by Joni Mitchell was reinterpreted. However, this song is a so-called hidden track and cannot be read on the back cover. The song also appeared on the soundtrack of the film A Boss to Fall in Love with Sandra Bullock and Hugh Grant with Vanessa Carlton as a backing singer .
In November 2003 the album Best of… Films About Ghosts was released . In addition, the Counting Crows toured in 2003 a. a. together with John Mayer , Maroon 5 and the Graham Colton Band.
In the summer of 2004, Counting Crows wrote the song Accidentally in Love for the soundtrack of the film Shrek 2 , which was nominated for an Oscar.
In March 2008 the album Saturday Nights and Sunday Mornings was released . This album, which is musically divided into two parts, offers heavier and rocky tracks in the first part and more melancholy and also quite folky songs in part two. The first single from the album was the track You Can't Count On Me .
In August 2014 the album Somewhere under Wonderland was released , which contains nine new songs.
