action

The socially and ecologically committed lawyer Lucy Kelson from New York campaigns against building projects in which social concerns are neglected and grown historical structures are destroyed. Lucy and two fellow activists lay down in front of an approaching wrecking ball in order to prevent the Wade Corporation from destroying a building , but was unsuccessful because the police arrested her. Lucy's parents, both lawyers who share her beliefs, pay the bail and the police pick her up.

To prevent the threatening demolition of another historic building in her hometown of Coney Island - the Coney Island Community Center - Lucy now turns directly to George Wade, who runs the Wade Corporation together with his brother Howard . The rich bon vivant and George Wade, known for his numerous affairs, is currently looking for a new lawyer. When Lucy wants to talk to him about the project, he spontaneously offers her the open position as a lawyer in his company. At first she doesn't think much of it, but then lets herself be persuaded, as her Wade promises if she is employed that he will save the community center and that she will then also have a say in construction projects and the distribution of donations from the Wade company.

Lucy can only have brief phone calls with her boyfriend Ansel because he is a Greenpeace activist on a ship . She breaks up with him after an argument. Lucy convinces Wade with her high level of professional competence; The initial personal aversion to him changes over time into sympathy and even falling in love, which she suppresses and does not want to admit due to the completely different approach to life and political stance of Wade.

Wade is also attracted to Lucy. Soon he will involve her in every decision, both in the professional and in the private sphere. Lucy's health is heavily burdened by the constant calls from Wade, which also wake her up in the middle of the night, and the inner contradiction of feelings towards him.

When Wade picks her up from her friend Meryl's wedding with a seemingly urgent phone call and it turns out that he only needed advice on a suitable suit, she terminates - in accordance with her contract - with a notice period of two weeks ( two weeks' notice ) . Wade does not want to let her go at first, but later gives up his resistance and assigns her to find a suitable successor for her position. Attorney June Carver gets an unannounced interview with Lucy and starts flirting with George, who hires her on the spot. She accompanies Wade to an event in the evening and then ends up in his apartment. When Lucy suddenly appears there, she finds the two of them lightly dressed, playing "strip chess".

Under pressure from his brother Howard, co-owner of the company, Wade surprisingly abandons his promise to save the community center. Lucy strongly reproaches him for this, and since she is hurt in her feelings because of June, she withdraws. As a result, she worked again in the legal aid association Legal Aid for the socially disadvantaged.

At the laying of the foundation stone for the new complex, George promised to keep the community center as he originally promised Lucy. He does not want to be further patronized by his brother and leaves the company. George goes to see Lucy at the Bar Association, and after a few lengthy explanations, they declare their love for each other.
