Adam Duritz (born August 1, 1964 in Baltimore , Maryland ) is the singer of the American music group Counting Crows .

Duritz, who also writes the band's songs, processes his own experiences in the lyrics. In “1492” he describes himself as “Russian Jew American”.

"Maria", a character that appears in many of the songs, is what he himself describes as his alter ego , his "feminine side". The band's first and most successful album, entitled August and everything after , was released in 1993 and includes: a. the world-famous songs Round here , Mr. Jones , Anna begins and Perfect blue buildings . The album also went platinum seven times and was named one of the best rock albums of 1993 by Rolling Stone magazine. This was followed by albums such as Recovering the Satellites , This Desert Life , Hard Candy , Saturday nights, sunday mornings , Underwater Sunshine (Or What We Did On Our Summer Vacation) and Somewhere Under Wonderland in September 2014 .

The songs that Duritz writes are mostly characterized by a melancholy mood, the genre of which can be found in the field of folk rock , but Duritz also wrote songs that combine rock and pop, such as American Girls . The Counting Crows achieved great fame especially in the United States, where they also played as the opening act for Bob Dylan.
