Screamo

Screamo is a form of emo . This expression is made up of the English scream (to shout) and emo [ ˈiːmoʊ ]. Musically, it is characterized by the speed and hardness of hardcore, with screaming ("screaming"; see guttural singing ) largely replacing classical singing.

Screamo developed in the early 1990s from the emo of the late 1980s and early 1990s, the development is similar to that of hardcore punk in that it used elements of emocore and took them to the extreme, as was the case with hardcore and punk is. The term "Screamo" was not used at this point in time. The first forerunners can be identified with the bands Iconoclast and Merel in New Jersey in 1990 , but the style did not establish itself as a separate variety until 1991 in San Diego with bands such as Heroin . In 1992, Portraits of Past , Mohinder and others were created in San Francisco , which made the style known on the east coast of the USA.

Musically, these pioneering bands were influenced by the post-hardcore bands that formed in Washington DC during the so-called “Revolution Summer” (especially The Nation of Ulysses and Fugazi ) and by the hardcore band Die Kreuzen . However, the Swing Kids also stressed the influence which the post-punk of Joy Division had on their music, can be found on the first 7 "single of the band, a cover of Joy Division song" Warsaw ".

The innovations of the above-mentioned bands were ultimately picked up by bands all over the US and groups emerged on the east coast with Orchid , pg.99 and Saetia , which influence Screamo bands to this day. While Orchid and pg.99 tend to move closer to grindcore with their fast, aggressive songs , Saetia made more generous use of the “classic emo sound”. Other groups, such as Funeral Diner , partly consisted of members of the pioneering bands (in the case by Funeral Diner, members of the band Portraits of Past). The post-hardcore group The Blood Brothers from Seattle can be regarded as influenced by the genre, but resisting a clear assignment .

At the end of the millennium, the genre had grown far beyond the borders of the USA, so with Envy, the most prominent representative of today's screamo comes from Japan. By mixing screamo with post-rock , the band created a variety of the genre that is very common, especially in Europe with bands like the French Daïtro and the Italians Raein . In Germany, too, there are widely recognized representatives in the groups Yage , Tristan Tzara , Kurhaus , Eaves and Escapado . In Bremen, around the labels React with Protest and Per Koro, a scene with an independent, somewhat metal- heavy style emerged; more well-known representatives are / were the bands Angststatus , Loxiran , Louise Cyphre and Acme .

Around 2005 most of the first Screamo bands had disbanded, but this did not affect the spread of the genre, as they were largely transferred to other bands, consisting of former members of the Orchid group, the band ... Who Calls So Loud from those of the Funeral Diner group, Off Minor from ex-Saetia members etc.

At around the same time, the term Screamo began to be used for bands that musically be more closely related to post-hardcore , metalcore or their sub-genres. From this point onwards, the meaning that the term had had until then and the development of the genre were largely ignored. As a rule, there is no connection between one of the above-mentioned groups and those that are now called Screamo, and musical parallels are usually very few. Many bands that use shouting as a stylistic device are now referred to as “Screamo”, with bands such as Underoath , Silverstein , Distance in Embrace and Alesana as examples . This development was mainly supported by music television , music magazines and the Internet. This development is sharply criticized by fans of the “original Screamo” and the terms “Emopop”, “Mall Emo”, “Mainstreamo” or “Fake Screamo” are used condescendingly, which also satirically refer to the different “philosophies” in dealing with (Sub -) Reference cultures. While Screamo, as a sub-genre of Hardcore, emphasizes the closeness to punk and thus to the DIY idea, popular “modern Screamo” bands move in a world of record labels and contracts or, to put it another way, are part of the record industry.

In contrast, there were bands who fed their music with elements of Grindcore , Crustcore and Extreme Metal , and based on the term Powerviolence they called their music Emoviolence . Well-known representatives are / were bands like Orchid , Arsen aka King of the Monsters , Battle of Wolf 359 and Resurrectionists . Extremely fast blast beats and melodic, octaved guitar riffs are typical of this music.

In terms of playing technique, Screamo is largely based on hardcore punk and is characterized by playing with loud-quiet dynamics as well as tempo changes, mostly the songs defy the traditional stanza-chorus-stanza structure. The focus is on the screaming of the lyrics, but many Screamo songs also contain spoken or sung parts in quieter places, which nevertheless try to resist any resemblance to classical singing.
