style

Tetsuya Fukagawa of Envy performing in Hong Kong (2011)

In its early phase it was more reminiscent of punk , but the complexity and length of the later songs alone made the music of these Japanese increasingly relate to art rock or post-rock . The texts are usually in Japanese. Their sound is hard, but since the album All the Footprints You've Left and the Fear Expecting Ahead , which was released in 2001, it has also been determined by rather epic song structures in which hard and brutal screaming passages alternate with melodic instrumental parts. Since this album, the pieces have consistently been pervaded by (guitar) melodies, which, due to their melancholy mood, are reminiscent of bands like Godspeed You! Reference Black Emperor . Singer Tetsuya Fukagawa made a guest appearance on the 2006 Mogwai album Mr. Beast .

The album Insomniac Doze , released in September 2006, shows a preponderance of calm instrumental passages with at most spoken texts pervading them, which, however, pile up again and again to full violence and finally lead to screamo-like outbursts by the singer.
