The crossing was one of four avant - rock band from Milwaukee . It was founded in 1981 by Dan Kubinski (vocals), Brian Egeness (guitar), Keith Brammer (bass) and Eric Tunison (drums). This line-up remained unchanged until Brian Egeness left and the band broke up in early 1992.
history
Singer Kubinski and guitarist Egeness played in a band called The Stellas and were looking for a drummer. The bassist Brammer, known to them from the Milwaukee music scene, recommended his friend, the drummer Tunison. When the original Stellas bassist left the band, the post was filled with Brammer and the band was renamed Die Kreuzen.
Butch Vig produced a large part of Die Kreuzen's work . The great commercial breakthrough was denied them for the entire decade of their existence, although a number of well-known musicians cite the crosses as a significant influence on their own work (among them e.g. Sonic Youth or Voivod ). It is not far to explain the relative lack of success of the crosses so that they were of their time to several years ahead - almost simultaneously with dissolution of the crosses sparked Nirvana's Nevermind (ironically also one Vig-production) 1991 grunge hype, the The Kreuzz already anticipated October File (1986) and Century Days (1988).
In 2006, Erosion Records released Lean into It - A Tribute to Die Kreuzen, a sampler that project coordinator Mark Steven Hillstrom worked on from 1996 to 2005. 25 bands pay tribute to the work of Die Kreuzen with their own interpretations of pieces from all musical phases of Die Kreuzen, including well-known names such as Voivod , Brutal Truth , Napalm Death and Mike Watt . In the booklet, Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) describes how a joint tour with Die Kreuzen radically developed the musical expression (“dynamic gestalt”) of his own band and describes them as the best band in the USA of their time: “Man there was a point there when the crosses were the best band in the USA. [...] Suddenly a new cerebral gate swung open so fucking fast that you felt yr brain rip out of yr skull. [...] A new approach to vocal shred, and a whole other world of time came into play. "
From 1998 onwards, Dan Kubinski was the singer and bassist of the punk / metal band Decapitado for a while .
Since 2012, Die Kreuzen has performed at irregular intervals at individual concerts, primarily in the Milwaukee region, but also at the Roadburn Festival in the Netherlands in 2013 . Couch Flambeau (ex-Couch Flambeau) serves as a replacement for Brian Egeness.
style
In its early phase, the music of the Kreuzers was unmistakably influenced by the hardcore punk of the time; the pieces were fast, hard, and short (on their self-titled debut in 1984 they play 21 pieces in 29 minutes). The US music magazine Trouser Press certifies that the band has transformed from fast, simple hardcore pieces full of “hyperkinetic energy” to more dynamic and more control over the songs. The editors Ira Robbins and John Leland found, however, that Kubinski's vocals represent "dispassionate screeching" on all recordings. The second album October File (1986) already differs greatly from its predecessor; the band gives their music more time, which makes their unorthodox songwriting more recognizable. While the debut still seemed quite homogeneous, each piece sounded new and different. The following publications, Century Days (1988), Gone Away (1989) and Cement (1990) were consistent continuations of the development towards avant-garde rock.
