history

2003–2007: The beginnings and first publications

In 2003, The Amity Affliction was founded in Gympie , a small town in South East Queensland. In the same year their first demo appeared, which was named after the band. In 2005 their first EP was released, which is also called The Amity Affliction . At this point, Joel Birch became the band's screamer. A tour through the entire east coast of Australia was started in 2005 .

In 2007 Lachlan Faulkner and Garth Buchanan left the band. Buchanan joined the Behind Crimson Eyes group. With Robin Sharpe, Ahren Stringer and Trad Nathan, three new musicians have joined The Amity Affliction. Together they released the EP High Hopes . The name is based on a location that appears in the horror film The Amityville Horror . The first edition contained an additional DVD showing the band producing the EP.

2008-2010: Severed Ties

In 2008 the band released their debut album Severed Ties , which placed 26th on the Australian charts for a week . Shortly before production, Chris and Ryan Burt joined as new musicians. The album features well-known guest musicians, including JJ Peters ( I Killed the Prom Queen , Deez Nuts ), Michael Crafter (I Killed the Prom Queen, Confession ) and Matthew Wright ( The Gateway Plan ). Shortly thereafter, the band played concerts in Perth , Melbourne , Sydney , Brisbane and Adelaide .

During May 2009 The Amity Affliction accompanied the bands The Gateway Plan and Elora Danan on their national final tour . The rest of the year the band planned their first headlining tour of Australia. During the tour the group was accompanied by the British band We Are the Ocean , the band Hopeless and a local support band. This tour was called Stairway to Hell . Then The Amity Affliction went to Great Britain with We Are The Ocean and gave a few concerts there, where they were also supported by All Forgotten and Flood of Red .

2010–2012: Youngbloods

At the end of 2009 the band decided to split up with Chris Burt. His last concert took place in London . The Gateway Plan's Clint Splattering took over.

In April 2010 the band flew to New York to record the second album. Between June 18 and 25, 2010, Youngbloods was finally released through Boomtown Records and Shock Records . Youngbloods debuted at number 6 on the Australian album charts. The album was also nominated for the ARIA Music Awards in the category Best Rock / Metal Album 2010 , but lost to Parkway Drive . Their promotional tour was supported by Misery Signals , Confessions , Flood of Red and Break Even . They toured together along the west coast of Australia.

In October the band released Glory Days , a compilation with all the songs from their demos and EP's, as well as the B-sides of the album Youngbloods . They also went on a UK tour with Deez Nuts , This Is Hell , Asking Alexandria and Louie Knuxx .

In January 2011, The Amity Affliction was seen in Europe. The tour went through Italy , Germany , the Netherlands , Austria , Great Britain , Switzerland , France , Belgium and Sweden . After the tour ended, the band flew back to Australia and played at the Soundwave Festival . The first concerts in the USA were planned for the end of March .

The Amity Affliction signed a worldwide recording deal with Roadrunner Records . Youngbloods was re-released through this label. It was released on October 28, 2011 as a download from this label. The follow-up album was released in 2012.

2012–2014: Chasing Ghosts

Already on September 17, 2011, Joel Birch announced at a concert in Queensland that the musicians would fly to America in early 2012 to work on the new album. Five days later, Ahren confirmed Birch's statement in an interview with Alt Music Hub and announced that the studio work would take place between March and April. Studio work with producer Michael Baskette in Orlando, Florida finally began on May 7, 2012. In June 2012, the title and expected release date were announced. In August 2012 it was announced that Imran Siddiqi no longer plays in the band. As a result, he was no longer seen in the music video for the title song Chasing Ghosts . Until the beginning of 2013, his post was held by session musicians. In March 2013 Dan Brown was integrated as the new guitarist in the band.

On September 7, 2012, The Amity Affliction's third album, Chasing Ghosts, was released. It was released via Roadrunner Records and entered the domestic charts just 3 weeks after its release. There the album immediately positioned itself at the top of the Australian charts. A release for the UK was scheduled for September 17, 2012 and a day later for the US . In Europe , the album was only released on September 28, 2012. In 2013, the album was awarded the gold record for 35,000 records sold in Australia .

After Daniel Brown was a substitute member during the tours, the band confirmed that he is now a permanent member of The Amity Affliction.

In the summer of 2013, The Amity Affliction played for the first time on the Warped Tour . During her speech in Portland ( Oregon ) is a drummer Ryan Burt injured his eye, so he for several concerts of Glass-Cloud was replaced -Schlagzeuger Chad Hasty. There was also a scandal during the Warped Tour. After Memphis May Fire singer Matty Mullins criticized the clothing style of several female festival goers, singer Joel Birch described him as a sexist. While still on the Warped Tour, the group had to cancel their set in Pittsburgh because Birch was on the verge of dehydration at the concert . The concert on the following day in Cleveland could only take place because Sam Carter ( Architects ), Chris Roetter ( Like Moths to Flames ) and Jason Butler ( Letlive ) spontaneously stood in for Joel Birch, who had to be hospitalized due to an unknown illness.

In September 2013, The Amity Affliction was seen on the Brothers in Arms Tour in Europe. The band played in Germany , the United Kingdom , Austria , France and Belgium during the tour . The English hardcore band Landscapes and In Hearts Wake from Australia performed as supporting acts . In October, the Brothers in Arms tour in Australia continued for eight more concerts. Stick to Your Guns and Chelsea Grin were confirmed as support .

2014–2016: Let the Ocean Take Me

At the end of 2013, the group released the demo song Cave In , which led to speculation that the song would be on the upcoming album. However, these were shattered when the group announced the tracks on the album. The first single is called Pittsburgh and was officially released on April 14, 2014. The single rose to number 28 in the Australian single charts . The album's second single, Don't Lean on Me , also entered the Australian single charts. 6,000 units sold were enough for this. The album was reissued in mid-2015 with additional material.

The album itself is titled Let the Ocean Take Me and was released worldwide on June 6, 2014. The producer was Will Putney , who also worked with Upon a Burning Body and Winds of Plague . The recordings took place at Evergreen Studios in Brisbane . Like its predecessor, the album rose to number 1 in Australia and was also awarded gold there. On July 10, 2015, the album was reissued with bonus material, including the tour documentary Seems Like Forever . For the new edition, the band played the song Skeletons , which acts as a single for the reprint .

On January 28, 2015, it was announced that the group would be participating in the Warped Tour this summer . The tour ran from June 19 to August 8, 2015. In October and November, the group toured the United States again as headliners. This concert tour was accompanied by Chelsea Grin , Secrets , Cruel Hand and The Plot in You . In 2016, the band also played major European music festivals such as Nova Rock , Hellfest , Greenfield Festival and Download Festival for the first time . In November the group released Shine On , the first new material since Let the Ocean Take Me .

2016-2018: This Could Be Heartbreak

On May 18, 2016, the band announced the release of a new album for August 12, 2016. This is called This Could Be Heartbreak and is the band's fifth studio album. On the same day, the first official single, I Bring the Weather With Me, including a music video was released and a festival tour through Europe was announced. An appearance at Rock am Ring in Mendig was canceled by the organizer due to the bad weather conditions. In July 2016, This Could Be Heartbreak was the album's second single released. The album was released on August 12, 2016. Three days earlier, another song from the album was pre-released with All Fucked Up . Like its two predecessors, This Could Be Heartbreak rose to number one in Australia and was also charted in the United States , the United Kingdom , New Zealand and Germany .

The band also made concert tours through Australia , North America and Europe , which were accompanied at times by Being as an Ocean , Hundredth , Wage War , Stray from the Path and Northlane .

In February 2018, the group announced the exit of their drummer Ryan Burt due to long-term mental health problems. Due to his illness, Burt had to cancel a European tour with the band at the end of 2016. The band announced that they want to complete all previously announced concerts as planned.

2018–2020: Misery

On June 20, 2018, the band announced the album Misery , which was released on August 24, 2018 and is now the group's sixth studio album. It is the first album that was recorded without the drummer Ryan Burt. Joe Longobardi ( Defeater ) took on the role of drummer . Misery was received rather mixed by fans, as, as already announced in some interviews, the album represents the most drastic style change in the band's career. Elements from synth-pop or alternative rock were used here, and thus very much broken with the original classic metalcore formula.

Since 2020: Everyone Loves You… Once You Leave Them

On January 8, 2020, the group announced the release of their new album Everyone Loves You… Once You Leave Them for February 21 of the same year via Pure Noise Records . From January 9th to March 6th, 2020 the group will tour Australia and Europe . On the European tour, the band plays as the opening act for Beartooth .

Band name and style of music

The name came about when a close friend of the band was killed in a car accident. According to the musician, The Amity stands for friendship between the members and Affliction should reflect the time after the friend's death. He died together with his 17-year-old younger sister in a traffic accident. Initially the band was called Left Lane Ends , because this accident happened on Left Lane Ends Road .

The band plays classic post-hardcore , although melodic hardcore influences can sometimes be found in their music.

Controversy

On the Warped Tour 2013 there was a scandal when Memphis May Fire singer Matty Mullins criticized the clothing style of many female festival goers. In a speech during the band's set a few days later, Joel Birch referred to Mullins as a "sexist".

Ahren Stringer, one of the band's singers, posted a photo on his Instagram profile in May 2014 on which a killed policeman was buried with the words “Freedom grows when cops get planted. Plant a freedom seed today ”(in German, for example: “ Freedom grows when a police officer is planted. Plant a freedom seed today ). Some fans reacted with incomprehension and started a shit storm . While some followers accused him of bigoted behavior, there were people who tried to defend him. Stringer apologized in another statement and justified his action with the fact that he often felt that he had been treated unfairly by the police in the past and that his hatred remained deep. He said that after the photo was posted on Instagram, he received threatening messages and death threats on his Twitter profile.
