Songwriting

Matty Mullins is primarily responsible for the lyrics on Memphis May Fire. Most of them are about personal experiences as musicians or about relationships between band members. In the song Prove Me Right , Mullins criticizes the music industry , alluding to an experience the group had with their first label, Trustkill Records .

"The first single we released was called Prove Me Right. That song is about the music industry and what it does to me. And just kind of realizing that the 15 year old me that just wanted a record deal and thought that people in the music industry were just there to help support you and your dream when the reality of it is that it's the complete opposite. It's a bunch of money hungry suits that really don't care - and I'm not saying that this is everybody - but some of the people that we worked with - people who don't really care about the music or the art at all . All they see is dollar signs. So that song is about everyone who ever kicked me when I was down - tried to make me feel like I couldn't accomplish what I have today. It's kind of a middle finger to everybody who ever said I couldn't do it - because I'm here doing it right now. "

“The first single we released was called Prove Me Right . The piece is about the music industry and what it means to me. My 15 year old wanted to get a record deal in the hopes that people in the music industry would help make your dream come true. However, reality shows that the opposite is true. There are some greedy people - I'm not saying that everyone is like that - but there are some people we've worked with - people who don't care about the music or the art itself. All they see is money. Therefore the song is addressed to all those who let me down when I was already down and to all those who made me believe that I couldn't achieve what I achieved today. It's kind of a middle finger to everyone who ever said to me that I couldn't do that - that's why I'm here now. "

However, Mullins' lyrics often deal with personal problems, such as lovesickness ( Miles Away ), self-harm or drug addiction ( Vices ). Miles Away is a song that he dedicated to his wife. It is about the difficult situation of deciding between his family and being a musician. In the piece he explains that the family is more important to him than his job as a musician. The guest vocalist on this song was written by Kellin Quinn . Most of the band's songs are inspired from the perspective of other people's experiences. Fans of the group have also been a source of inspiration for some of Mullins' lyrics. But friends and families of the musicians also influence the way the lyrics are worked out. According to Mullins, this resulted in the album The Hollow .

Musical influences

Mullins names the hardcore band Every Time I Die as the main musical influence . He is also influenced in his music by groups such as Architects , Bring Me the Horizon Atreyu , and Asking Alexandria . In an interview he said that the group tried to copy each other a little when performing live with other bands.

controversy

During the performance of his band Memphis May Fire as part of the Warped Tour on July 11, 2013, the singer gave a speech before the start of the piece Jezebel in which he criticized the questionable clothing style of some female festival goers. Both on the social network Tumblr , he earned anger and incomprehension from female fans of the band for his statement. Joel Birch, singer of the Australian melodic hardcore band The Amity Affliction - who also played on the Warped Tour - also harshly criticized Mullins for his address.

"The other guys in Memphis May Fire are cool as fuck, but Matty Mullins can get the fuck off Warped."

Almost two years later, Mullins said in an interview with The Badchristian Podcast that he used the "wrong words" to express his displeasure.
