Sleeping with Sirens is a post-hardcore band from Orlando , Florida , founded in 2009 by the musicians of the groups We Are Defiance , For All We Know and Broadway .
The band consists of singer Kellin Quinn , rhythm guitarist Jack Fowler , and electric bass player Justin Hills. Nick Martin has also been the lead guitarist for Sleeping with Sirens since the end of 2013 . Notable former musicians of the band include Brian Calzini , Jesse Lawson and Brandon McMaster. Calzini, who founded Sleeping with Sirens after his dispute with Paddock Park , was kicked out of the band after a few months and replaced by Quinn.
So far, the group has released three studio albums with With Ears to See and Eyes to Hear in 2010, Let's Cheers to This a year later, and Feel in 2013, all of which were released on Rise Records . Her third studio album, Feel , debuted in the United States , the United Kingdom and Australia . In addition, a five-track acoustic EP was released in 2012 under the name If You Were a Movie, This Would Be Your Soundtrack , which was also released via Rise. Between August 2014 and November 2014, the group continued to work without a record company and released their fourth studio album, Madness, on March 17, 2015 via Epitaph Records .
The music style of the group can be roughly assigned to rock music . In fact, the group is a newer school post-hardcore band. The music also features elements from alternative rock , pop rock and pop punk , such as “sing-alongs”. Rather untypical for a post-hardcore band is the infrequent use of breakdowns . Another outstanding feature is the voice of front singer Kellin Quinn , who is in the tenore di grazia . The musicians write their own song lyrics and mostly act on Christian topics.
Sleeping with Sirens played increasingly in North America , Europe and Australia over the course of her career . The group has also been seen in Southeast Asia and South America . The quintet played at the Reading and Leeds Festivals , the Soundwave Festival , the Warped Tour and the Slam Dunk Festival . On their concert tours, the band has already appeared with groups such as Pierce the Veil , Bring Me the Horizon , Tonight Alive , Memphis May Fire , The Color Morale and The Amity Affliction .
In the course of the band's career, the group was nominated for several famous music awards. Sleeping with Sirens was named for a Kerrang in 2013 and 2015 ! Award nominated. At the Alternative Press Music Awards 2014 , which are presented by the music magazine Alternative Press , Sleeping with Sirens was nominated in several categories. In 2015 the group received a "Skully" for the song Kick Me .
history
The Beginnings and With Ears to See and Eyes to Hear
Sleeping with Sirens was founded in 2009 by former paddock park singer Brian Calzini in Orlando , Florida after he was kicked out of that same band . A little later, with the two guitarists Brandon McMasters and Dave Aguliar, as well as bassist Paul Russell, keyboardist Kellin Quinn and drummer Alex Kaladjian, other musicians joined Calzini.
Calzini was kicked out of the group in the founding year after the group had recorded several demo pieces and replaced by the previous keyboardist Quinn at the microphone. Brian Calzini then founded the now defunct post-hardcore band We Are Defiance . He was later to report in several interviews about the reasons for his expulsion. With Calzini, Russell, Kaladjian and Aguliar left the band. These were replaced by Nick Trombino on rhythm guitar , Justin Hills on bass and Gabe Barham on drums.
On March 23, 2010, the group released their debut album, With Ears to See and Eyes to Hear, on the US record label Rise Records after the band was signed at the end of 2009. This was the group's only album with Brandon McMasters and Nick Trombino. They were replaced by Jesse Lawson on rhythm and Jack Fowler on lead guitar . Fowler was still playing on Broadway at the time . McMasters founded the group The Crimson Armada after he left .
Let's Cheers to This
On December 7, 2010, the musicians announced that they would move into the studio with producer Kris Crummett in February next year to work with him on a new album. The album, which was called Let's Cheers to This , was officially released on May 10, 2011 and entered the official album charts for the first time , where it entered at number 78 and only stayed there for a week.
Two months before Let's Cheers to This was released , the band played a concert tour through the United States as part of the Artery Across the Nation Tour , which was accompanied by The Amity Affliction and Of Mice & Men , among others . Sleeping with Sirens completed their first European tour between September 25 and October 13, 2011, which included a total of 17 concerts and led through the United Kingdom , France , Italy , Germany , Switzerland , Belgium and the Netherlands . The group played in the opening act for I Set My Friends On Fire , Woe, Is Me and A Skylit Drive . In November and December of the same year, the group played in the opening act for We Came as Romans through the United States . This concert tour was also accompanied by Attila , Emmure and For All I Am . The group completed the first tour of 2012 in January and February together with Attack! Attack! , The Ghost Inside , Dream On, Dreamer and Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! . This tour went through North America.
In April 2012, If You Were a Movie, This Would Be Your Soundtrack, an acoustic EP comprising five tracks, was announced for June 26, 2012. The EP made it to number 17 in the official album charts.
Sleeping with Sirens spent the summer of 2012 on the entire Warped Tour for the first time . Between October 12 and November 23, 2012, the group was part of the Collide with the Sky Tour , a concert section of Pierce the Veil 's world tour of the same name , which was also accompanied by Tonight Alive and Hands Like Houses and led through North America. Pierce the Veil and Sleeping with Sirens also played a co-headlining tour in Southeast Asia in February and March 2013 , which was also part of the Collide-with-the-Sky world tour.
Feel
On October 21, 2012, Dead Walker Texas Ranger released a stand-alone single as a special for Halloween . In January 2013 Sleeping with Sirens moved into the studio to work on their third studio album. The first single, called Low , was officially released on April 22, 2013. On the same day, the release date for Feel was announced. Feel was launched on June 4, 2013 and sold almost 60,000 times in the first week of sales in the USA alone, which meant that the album entered the official album charts at number 3 and lasted a total of twelve weeks. In addition, the album reached chart listings for the first time in the British and Australian album charts, where the album could enter at number 36 and 14 respectively.
As early as August 2012 it was announced that the band would play at the entire Soundwave Festival , which led through five cities in Australia . The music festival took place between February 23 and March 4, 2013. A week after the Soundwave Festival, the band went on a concert tour of the United States. Between May 14th and June 1st 2013 Sleeping with Sirens played their first small European tour as the main band. The mini-tour led mainly through the United Kingdom , but also occasionally through Germany , the Netherlands and Belgium . On this tour, five concerts were moved to larger concert halls due to increased demand. Sleeping with Sirens were among the Kerrang! Awards nominated in the category Best Newcomer Band , but Of Mice & Men had to give way.
The band spent the summer on the Warped Tour again . In September the group played again through Europe, with Hands Like Houses , The Summer Set and The Getaway Plan appearing in the opening act. Immediately afterwards the group played again in the United Kingdom. Already on this tour, Jesse Lawson , who announced his resignation from the band a little later, was replaced by Nick Martin as a session musician on lead guitar . Martin was later confirmed as a permanent guitarist for the group. Lawson later embarked on a solo music career, releasing an EP and an album. After touring the United Kingdom, the band played again in the United States, with the group being accompanied by Memphis May Fire , Breathe Carolina , Issues and Our Last Night .
Madness
On May 29, 2014, the US music magazine Alternative Press reported that the band was back in the studio to work on their fourth album, the editor citing a message from singer Kellin Quinn on his Twitter profile. In August 2014 the group announced that they had not signed a new record deal with Rise Records and wanted to work as an independent band. On November 10th, the group released their first single, Kick Me, and announced that they were on Epitaph Records . The original plan was to release the album on their own, but the musicians decided to work with Epitaph Records because they found the album too good to take such a risk. On January 22nd, 2015, the second single , Go, Go, Go, followed . In addition, the band's fourth studio album was presented. This is called Madness and was published March 16, 2015 in Europe and one day later worldwide. Also Madness increased international one in the charts.
Sleeping with Sirens were nominated in four categories at the inaugural Alternative Press Music Awards , including Artist of the Year , Best Singer, and Best Album for Feel . However, the group did not win in any category. For the piece Kick Me , which was nominated at the second Alternative Press Music Awards , the band won the award for best single . The group also became a member of the Kerrang! Awards 2015 nominated in the category of the best international band .
On November 4, 2014, the band started a co-headlining tour with Pierce the Veil as part of a joint world tour , which after 70 concerts, including the SelfHelp Fest in San Bernardino ( California ), on April 11, 2015 in London , United Kingdom ended. Between August 11 and 23, 2015, the band played a tour through South America for the first time , which included Argentina , Brazil , Chile and Mexico . About a month later a tour of Australia and New Zealand followed . Between October and November 2015, the band was seen with One Ok Rock in support of All Time Low on their Future Hearts Tour in North America. On February 20, 2016, the group starts a European tour (together with Beach Weather, This Wild Life and Mallory Knox) which ends on March 6, 2016.
Gossip and Acoustic and Unplugged
On January 8, 2016, it was announced that the group was working on a new album. An acoustic album has also been announced. This is called Acoustic and Unplugged and was released on April 16, 2016. It contains 15 songs from different albums of the group. It rose to number 174 in the US album charts. In mid-July 2017, a new song was released with Legends and the fifth album, called Gossip , was announced for September 22, 2017.
In February and March 2016, Sleeping with Sirens completed a European tour, which was accompanied by Mallory Knox , This Wild Life and Beach Weather . Due to difficult family circumstances, guitarist Justin Hills canceled his participation in this concert tour. He was replaced on guitar for this tour by session musician Alex Howard.
The group was announced for the full Warped Tour on the night of March 23, 2016 . The band planned to play older pieces on the Warped Tour. A few days after the end of the Warped Tour, a tour through the United States was announced for the period from November to December, with State Champs and Tonight Alive in the opening act. Before this tour, the band made their first appearances on Pukkelpop and the Lowlands in August 2016 . The group also plays at the Reading and Leeds Festivals, where they are performing for the second time, with the group playing on the main stage for the first time.
How It Feels to Be Lost
On June 21, 2019 the band announced that they had signed with Sumerian Records and announced their new album How It Feels to Be Lost for September 6 of the same year.
style
music
The group itself describes their style of music as rock . The musicians try to use as few breakdowns as possible in their pieces . The lyrics are written by the band themselves and written in English . Kellin Quinn's clear vocals are reminiscent of Anthony Green from Circa Survive . The music style can roughly be described as post-hardcore . Screams and clear vocals mostly alternate, with Kellin Quinn's clear vocals predominating in most of the band's pieces. The group's music also features elements from alternative rock , pop rock and pop punk (such as classic so-called “sing-alongs”). Billboard describes the group's musical style in their band biography as a mix of metalcore and emo .
Texts
The group, who write their own lyrics, mostly deal with Christian themes in their songs . In an interview with the US portal AbsolutePunk.net , for example, it was said that the album Let's Cheers to This was originally called Who Are You Now? should wear what has a Christian meaning. After the musicians found out that the group The Providence had already released an album of the same name, the working title was renamed to the album's current name.
The piece Do It Now, Remember It Later, on the other hand, is supposed to be a kind of outstretched "middle finger" aimed at all people who rail against the band because of the music style and the lyrics. Kellin Quinn described in an interview with the online music portal AbsolutePunk.net that they would not write music for others but for themselves.
"It's about everyone's opinion about our band. It's the middle finger to everybody [that has a negative opinion]; we're going to make the music we're going to make. We don't make music for anyone else, we make music for ourselves; if fans like to listen to it, then that's great - that's the cherry on top of the cake. But I think that if you're not making music that you want to make, then you're not doing the right thing. So that's what that song stands for, doing what you want to do and not worrying about what people think about you. "
In an interview with the German FUZE Magazine , when asked what role the Christian faith played in his life, he replied that it was a part of him, but as a feeling and not as a practice. He also said that Sleeping with Sirens is not a Christian rock band and that the label does not fit the group.
Tours
Sleeping with Sirens are one of the few groups that also accommodate acoustic sets during their performances. According to Kellin Quinn, the group played their acoustic pieces at first concerts mainly from their main set.
So far, Sleeping with Sirens has made several appearances in North America , Europe and Southeast Asia . In March 2013 the group will tour Australia ( Soundwave Festival ) for the first time . The band could be seen at concerts with international big names like We Came as Romans , Emmure , A Skylit Drive , I Set My Friends on Fire , Woe, Is Me and The Amity Affliction . The only continent the band has not yet visited is Africa .
