Dream On, Dreamer was a post-hardcore band from Melbourne , formed in 2009 . After several line-up changes, the group consists of singer Marcel Gadacz , the two guitarists Zachary Britt and Callan Orr, as well as bassist Chris Shaw and drummer Dylan Kuiper.

The group was meanwhile under contract with UNFD and Rise Records and so far released two EPs with Set Sail, Armada and Hope , as well as two albums with Heartbound and Loveless on the record companies. Both albums were able to place in the domestic charts . In addition, the debut album was nominated for an ARIA Music Award . The third album, Songs of Soulitude , released in 2015, was self-released and also reached the national charts.

The group develops their music style from album to album. Did the group play a classic variant of post-hardcore with influences from electronic music on their two EPs and their debut album , which is called Attack! Attack! could be compared, the sound of the band on the follow-up album Loveless became much more melodic. The reasons for the permanent changes in the music style are the abundant line-up changes within the band and the urge to create their own sound, which stands out from other groups in the post-hardcore scene. The lyrics, which are written by the singer Marcel Gadacz, have a personal and profound background.

The band toured several times through Australia (including the Soundwave Festival ), North America and Europe . Dream On, Dreamer has also been seen in Japan and Russia . The group played with bands such as Pierce the Veil , Sleeping with Sirens , Avenged Sevenfold , Silverstein , Memphis May Fire , A Skylit Drive , The Devil Wears Prada , Abandon All Ships , The Ghost Inside and A Day to Remember .

The group disbanded in early 2020.

Third album: Songs of Soulitude

In mid-January 2014, singer Marcel Gadacz announced that the group had started writing new pieces and that there would be a new album. Compared to the previous albums, this time all the musicians in the band will be working on the music. The band initially planned to record their third album in the United States with Steve Evetts, who had already worked with The Dillinger Escape Plan , Poison the Well and Every Time I Die . Evetts worked with the band on the single Darkness Brought Me Here , which was first heard on Triple J and was finally released on August 8, 2014. On August 11, 2015, the group announced that their third studio album would be called Songs of Soulitude . With this announcement, the band also started the pre-order phase, although the release date is still unknown. The album was not produced by Evetts, but by Matt Goldman at Glow in the Dark Studios. The band also announced that they would contact a pre-orderer of the album to record their own song for them. On September 29, 2015, the first song on the album, Vertigo , was released. At the same time it was announced that Songs of Soulitude will be released on November 13, 2015. The previously released tracks Darkness Brought Me Here and Don´t Lose Your Heart are stand-alone singles and cannot be found on the album.

In April 2014 the group announced the departure of their bassist Daniel Jungwirth. This was replaced by Chris Shaw. Shaw previously played in House vs. Hurricane . Shaw asked the musicians if he could join the band as a musician.

Between June 4th and 15th, 2014, the group toured with Being as an Ocean as opening act for In Hearts Wake on their Earthwalker Tour through Australia . In August and September 2014 the group played several concerts on a national level. In October and November 2014 the group toured Australia again as part of the … And the Light Pulled Me Back Tour . Between January 13th and 30th, 2015, the group played with Any Given Day as the opening act for Caliban through Germany , Austria , Belgium , Switzerland , the Netherlands and Poland . Concerts in the United Kingdom , France and Russia followed immediately . From May 3 to 10, 2015, the group played as the opening act for Silverstein in Australia. The group was to tour Central Europe again between September 24th and October 3rd, 2015, this time as the main support act for Breakdown of Sanity . However, a few days before the start of the tour, the musicians announced that they would not take part in the concert tour due to the unclear health situation of their singer Marcel Gadacz. In addition, Aaron Fiocca left the band, which was later replaced by Dylan Kuiper on drums.

Fourth and fifth albums: It Comes and Goes and What If I Told You It Doesn't Get Better

After the group had been quiet for a long time, a new song, Let It In , was released in mid-March 2018 . A short time later, the fourth studio album It Comes and Goes was announced for May 25, 2018. On February 9, 2020, the musicians announced the breakup of the band after a farewell tour. In addition, the group will release their fifth and final album What If I Told You It Doesn't Get Better on March 27, 2020 . The announced farewell tour was canceled in mid-March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and should be rescheduled at a later date.

style

The sound of Dream On, Dreamer has been constantly changing since the band was founded in 2009. Did the band Dream On, Dreamer play a classic variant of post-hardcore on their two EPs and their debut album Heartbound , which also includes elements of electronic music, which is why the band could also be regarded as a trancecore band, so the sound on their second album Loveless changed significantly in a more melodic direction of post-hardcore. Mitch from Allschools Network and Chris Hidden from British magazine Rock Sound described that the band's sound [on Heartbound] attached to Attack Attack! approach and build on classic metalcore . On Loveless the sounds became much more melodic than on the earlier releases. One reason for this is the constant change of musicians in the band. The electronic passages were arranged by backtracking after keyboardist Daniel Jungwirth switched to bassist for the band in 2012 . These electronic samples were used much less often on the second album. Originally the music was composed only by guitarist Callan Orr. On the third album, however, the other members of the band are supposed to be involved in the writing process.

Another reason their music is constantly changing is the fact that many post-hardcore bands sound roughly the same. The group wants to create a musical recognition value. In an interview with singer Marcel Gadacz, who is mainly responsible for the group's lyrics, in March 2015 it was said that the band had incorporated even more melodic aspects into their music. The band has also distanced itself further from the use of guttural singing, which could be heard more often on the earlier works as growling or screaming .

In terms of album production, too, the band has embraced innovations. If the debut album was recorded by Cameron Mizell , a music producer well known in the music scene, the group took care of the production of the work itself on the successor. The reason for this was that the end product was not what the musicians wanted to achieve. In an interview with Benny Doyle of the Australian online music magazine The Music, Gadacz made it clear that he enjoyed the time with the band in the United States while recording the album and described Mizell as a good music producer. The production of the third album, Matt Goldman, is again taken over by an outside music producer.

Singer Marcel Gadacz's lyrics usually have a profound meaning, which is not least due to his origin. On Loveless , the songs mainly deal with a period in the singer's life in which he was looking for himself. He describes "making something out of your life" that is the message behind the band, but added that it is up to you to decide what you make of your life.
