Feel (2013) Madness Live and Unplugged (2016)

Madness is the fourth studio album by the American rock band Sleeping with Sirens . It was released worldwide on March 13, 2015. The album is the band's first work that was not released on Rise , but on Epitaph Records .

It is also the first album with Nick Martin as guitarist , who initially accompanied Jesse Lawson as a session musician after his departure and was later integrated into the band. The standard version of the album includes thirteen tracks, while the deluxe version has two additional tracks.

The album was recorded by John Feldmann in the summer of 2014 and, like its predecessor Feel , which had been released almost two years earlier, reached international chart listings. It was nominated in the category for Album of the Year at the Alternative Press Music Awards .

Backstory

At the beginning of the year, the group and producer Nick Raskulinecz moved into the studio in Nashville , Tennessee, and recorded a total of thirteen pieces for their new album. However, they were later discarded. Still, two songs later were selected as bonus material for the deluxe version of the album.

On May 29, 2014, the American music magazine Alternative Press reported that the musicians had moved into the studio to work on their fourth album. The editor Tyler Sharp referred to a message from the singer Kellin Quinn on Twitter . In August it was announced that the group had not renewed their record deal with Rise Records in order to instead work as an independent band. However, the band announced on November 10th of the same year that they would be accommodated by Epitaph Records . Originally it was planned to release the album on your own. The collaboration with Epitaph Records came about because the musicians felt that the album was too good to be released without a record label behind them.

Publications

On November 10, 2014, when the group announced that they had signed a record deal with Epitaph Records, the main single of the album was released with the song Kick Me . On January 22nd, 2015, Go, Go, Go followed , the second release including a music video together with the official announcement of the album, which is entitled Madness and was due to be released worldwide on March 13th, 2015.

After the album was released, two more singles were released exactly four months later with The Strays on May 9 and Better Off Dead , so that a total of four singles were released. The album itself was released on March 13, 2015.

The concerts on June 22 and 23, 2015 in Orlando , Florida , of this tour were recorded and released as a live album on April 8, 2016 under the name Live and Unplugged . English language reviews

Based on six English-language reviews, Madness received a 74 percent rating on Metacritic . Jason Pettigrew of the American Alternative Press wrote that the group was trying to mix a wide variety of music styles, including pop , post-hardcore and acoustic music. According to Pettigrew, the band had already tried this on Feel . However, according to the critic, the band managed this musical balancing act much better than on the previous album, which is what makes the production by John Feldmann . He describes the song Fly as the best song that Paramore forgot to write for her last album. Also the British Kerrang! gave the album a good rating. Allmusic's James Christopher Monger wrote a good review. The group plays a variant of modern rock music influenced by punk . He compares the singing of Kellin Quinn , which he emphasizes positively, to Jeremy Enigk from Sunny Day Real Estate . According to Monger, the musicians have grown musically and emotionally beyond themselves, with Madness they have released their strongest album to date, even if this is musically based much more on pop music and moves towards the end of hardcore .

The album was discussed less euphorically in the New York Times . John Caramanica wrote that Madness has turned out to be a strong album, but moments of surprise like the song We Like It Loud , which serves aggressive moments with honey, are very rare. The album is compared to the most recent works by Paramore. The lyrics have a deeper meaning, but at times they don't match the energy of the guitar playing, especially that of Jack Fowler . Nevertheless, he describes the lyrics as uninspired at times, emphasizing the pieces Better Off Dead and The Strays , which take up the subject of depression and suicide or growing up and having the feeling of being unloved, as positive examples. The album in the Canadian Exclaim! path. Branan Ranjanathan wrote that the songs Kick Me and Better Off Dead show their musical roots, which lie in post-hardcore, and have energetic riffs as well as a great vocal variety. However, the sound structure falls apart when the band tries to break into other musical realms. The music is geared towards Quinn's singing, which, in contrast to the other critics, he describes as inaudible. Madness shows that the group could create different song structures, but the group screwed up the momentum all along the line.

German-language reviews

Sebastian Berning from Powermetal.de basically wrote a neutral review. He compares the album with the work In Love and Death of The Used . With the opener Kick Me , the band already achieved the highlight of the album. Nevertheless, he highlights other pieces such as Go, Go, Go , Better Off Dead and We Like It Loud , which he thinks have succeeded. He even compares We Like It Loud with The Useds Take It Away , while he describes the song The Strays as quota ballad pop, which could have made it onto a One Direction or Taylor Swift album. In summary, Berning thinks it's a shame that the band has turned more to pop music , especially since the album has places to rock out. He confirmed his opinion expressed at the beginning and described the album as the In Love and Death of the new generation. Stephan Wahle from Ox-Fanzine writes that Pierce the Veil have taken a similar musical direction at times, but still sound more innovative and exciting than Sleeping with Sirens for a long time. Still, according to Wahle, the fact that Sleeping with Sirens may have been overtaken by more interesting genre colleagues will not matter to many people. He predicts that Madness will probably work, but he dared not prophesy a possible success in Europe.

Frank Engelhardt from FUZE Magazine writes that the group on Madness is pulling out the big guns. Above all, producer John Feldmann , who worked with 5 Seconds of Summer and Stick to Your Guns in the past , is praised. In this way he helps the band to keep their soul and still sound as mainstream as possible. He predicts the album will be a commercial success and is of the opinion that the stages in this country will be too small for this band in the near future.
