Good Charlotte is an American pop punk band from Waldorf, Maryland . The band name is derived from the children's book Good Charlotte: The Girls of the Good Day Orphanage by author Carol Beach York , from which Joel and Benjamin Madden's mother is said to have often read.
history
Good Charlotte was founded in 1996 in Waldorf, Maryland. Every founding member of the band attended La Plata High School . The band made a name for themselves near Washington, DC by participating in the annual HFStival festival in 1998 and 1999. After winning a youth festival, the band got a record deal in May 2000, which enabled them to market their music internationally. Her first album Good Charlotte was u. a. successful in Australia and New Zealand where it achieved platinum status. After numerous tours in the States and Europe, she released her second album, The Young & The Hopeless .
In the US, Good Charlotte received triple platinum for this album. A world tour followed. Then the band took a break and retired to the studio.
Her third album The Chronicles of Life and Death was released in October 2004. It is available as a death and limited live version.
In the spring of 2005, Good Charlotte went on a European tour. Her drummer Chris Wilson was already missing from this tour. In May 2005, the band finally separated from him completely. "Personal health problems" were given as the reason.
In late 2005, they retired to the studio again to write their fourth album, Good Morning Revival . According to the company, it should be "the best Good Charlotte album of all". They declared that they wanted to include old and new influences. In October 2006 a new song called Keep Your Hands Off My Girl came out, which can be heard for free on the official website. On March 16, 2007, the album Good Morning Revival was released in Germany and entered the album charts at number 10. After the first single Keep Your Hands Off My Girl , the second single The River was released on May 25, 2007 .
In early June 2007, Good Charlotte performed at the Rock im Park and Rock am Ring festivals .
On November 28, 2008, the remix album Good Charlotte, Greatest Remixes , was released, in which artists such as The Game or Fall Out Boy were involved.
On August 11th 2010 November 2nd was announced as the release date of the new album Cardiology and their new single Like it's her Birthday was presented on the band's homepage.
On September 1, 2011, Good Charlotte stated in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine that the band were taking an indefinite break.
Member Joel Madden has been a judge and coach on the Australian singing talent show The Voice , which airs on Nine Network , since the first season in 2012 .
In April 2013, member Joel Madden announced via Twitter that the band would work on new material in 2014 at the earliest.
“Working on it man. We will be done this madden bros record by summer, GC will make something new next year. "
On November 3, 2015, Good Charlotte announced via Facebook that the hiatus announced in September 2011 was over. Two days later, on November 5th, 2015, the band released the single "Makeshift Love", their first material in almost five years. In addition, a comeback concert has been announced for November 19th. On April 1, 2016, "Alternative Press" published an article in which the name and cover of the new album were shown for the first time. "Youth Authority" was released on July 15, 2016.
At the beginning of June 2018, Good Charlotte appeared again at Rock im Park and Rock am Ring .

Joel and Benji Madden
Joel Ryan Reuben Madden and Benjamin "Benji" Levi Madden were born on March 11, 1979 in Waldorf, Maryland as identical twins .
Both went to La Plata High School and were often referred to as " freaks " by their own account , which inspired them to the songs The Anthem and Little Things .
Benjamin Madden taught himself to play guitar just four weeks before the band was formed.
Benjamin and Joel have two other siblings: a younger sister named Sarah and an older brother, Josh, who runs their fashion company Made with them . Her father left the family on December 24, 1995 when the two brothers were 16 years old. This experience was reflected in the pieces Emotionless , The Young & The Hopeless , Story of My Old Man and Little Things . The latter song became her first single.
Benji and Joel are vegetarians and have repeatedly supported the animal welfare organization PETA .
Joel has been married to Nicole Richie since December 2010 . Their daughter Harlow was born on January 11, 2008, their son Sparrow on September 9, 2009. Benji was in a relationship with Paris Hilton and Holly Madison for a while. He has been in a relationship with actress Cameron Diaz since May 2014 . In December 2014, the engagement of the two was announced. They got married on January 5, 2015.
William George Dean Martin
William Dean Martin (Billy Martin) was born on June 15, 1981 in Annapolis , Maryland .
Martin has been playing the guitar since he was twelve . He founded his first band, Overflow , together with J. D. and Steve Sievers, with Steve he ran his fashion label LeveL 27 , which he closed at the end of 2009. He met Benji and Joel in Annapolis at a newcomer competition.
He likes to draw; the pictures in the album The Chronicles of Life and Death are from his hand and he also designed the sets for the videos for The Chronicles of Life and Death and Predictable .
Billy is also very involved in animal welfare and is also a vegetarian. He has been married to Linzi Martin since March 1, 2008. The two know each other from school and have been a couple ever since. Their first son Dreavyn was born on January 26, 2009 in Pasadena.
Paul Anthony Thomas
Paul Thomas was born in Maryland on October 5, 1980 .
He used to play guitar , but then switched to bass . He has known Joel and Benji Madden since childhood and went to La Plata High School with them. He only met Billy Martin in 1996 when he joined the band.
Dean Butterworth
Dean "Deano" Butterworth was born on September 26, 1976 in Rochdale , England .
He moved to America at the age of 10 and started playing drums at the age of 12. During the first few years he concentrated on jazz and fusion drumming . He gained experience, much like Stewart Copeland of The Police fluent, often within the same song, switching from one style to another and began to expand into many different styles. It is this versatility that later allowed him to work with many different artists and bands such as B. Morrissey , The Innocent Criminals , The Used or the blues legend John Lee Hooker .
Back in 2005, after Good Charlotte broke up with their drummer, Dean was asked if he could temporarily replace them. He has been an official member of the band since March 2007.
