We Are Defiance is an American post-hardcore band from Ocala / Florida , founded in 2009, consisting of Brian Calzini ( vocals ), Andi Encinas ( guitar ), Dean Dragonas ( bass ), Daniel Hendrix (vocals), Jason Neil (guitar) and Trevor Rizzo ( drums ). They officially broke up in April 2015 and got back together in October a year later.

history

Foundation and trust in Few

Calzini, who already founded the bands Sleeping with Sirens and Paddock Park , started We Are Defiance in 2009, shortly after he was kicked out of Paddock Park. Jason Neil, the second singer from Paddock Park, also left the band on the grounds that he could not build a private life through the many tours. Neil then became guitarist for We Are Defiance. Two weeks later, Paddock Park broke up as they couldn't find new singers. The name We Are Defiance is a combination of the play Defiance and the movie I Am Legend with Will Smith .

The band released their first single To the Moon in July 2009 on ITunes . This sold very well in the United States, so that Tragic Hero Records and other indie labels became aware of the band. Due to the band's growing fan base, the label finally signed the band. The debut album was scheduled for March 2011. Calzini stated that guest musicians would also be heard on the album. Those would be Danny Worsnop from Asking Alexandria and The Word Alive front singer Telle Smith . Smith starred in the song Not Another Song About You , but Worsnop canceled because he was working with his band on their second album and the release dates between Reckless and Relentless and Trust in Few were only a few weeks. The singer announced that the album should appear as planned despite a traffic accident - with the band bus and Calzini himself damaged. However, the publication was delayed by two weeks.

The producer was Tom Denney , who was playing guitar on A Day to Remember at the time of production . Denney was also a school friend of Calzini. Together with Denney they covered the song Airplanes by the American singer BoB A Day to Remember also comes from Ocala. On November 29th the band started their first US tour, which took them through Virginia , Arkansas , California , Tennessee , Texas , Arizona , Nevada and Florida . The band also took part in a preliminary round for the Vans Warped Tour , where the band couldn't win.

Tour activity

In early 2011, the group toured with Legends , Monster and Dr. Acula through the United States. During this tour, the band was involved in a car accident in early January, during which singer Calzini had to be taken to the hospital. According to the tape, the accident was triggered by black ice. They have also toured the nation with I Am Ghost and This Romantic Tragedy . Due to the accident during the US tour in January, the release date had to be postponed by 2 weeks. On March 29, 2011, the band's debut album in Few was released worldwide.

The album made it to number 28 on the Heatseekers chart on Billboard . There, holding Trust Few , however, only a week. The band performed together with Horse the Band , Letlive and For the Fallen Dreams at SXSW 2011. This date coincided with the group's tour with Oh, Sleeper and Like Moths to Flames. On their tour with Scarlett O'Hara , the band was involved in a shootout during their stay and no one was injured.

In February the group toured the States as headliners for the first time. Support bands were This Romantic Tragedy , The Last of Our Kind ( Mediaskare Records ) and Speaking the Kings . This music tour was called "The New Year to Fear" tour. On May 29, 2012, Andi Encinas announced on his Facebook page that he was no longer a guitarist with We Are Defiance. During the same period, another music video was released, this time for "I'm Gonna Bury You Underground Eli".

resolution

The release of the second album, which should be called "Live & Learn", was scheduled for the end of 2012. It was planned that the album would be produced again by Tom Denney. Brian Calzini , who is responsible for the lyrics, had mostly finished writing the lyrics. They should be about personal experiences and feelings of the singer. He wrote some of the lyrics in New Hampshire, where he attended his grandmother's funeral. The studio work was postponed to 2013, however, as A Day to Remember meanwhile wrote their new album and Tom Denney was also there. Since the group has signed a contract for only two albums with Tragic Hero, this could be the last on the label for the time being. On May 1, 2013, Tragic Hero announced on its website that the group with Tom Denney and Andrew Wade were in Diamond Studios and would begin studio work there.

On April 3, 2015, the band officially announced their breakup on their Facebook page. The reason for this step is the current private situation of the individual band members, which makes it impossible for the group to continue. Andi Encinas has since joined the band Favorite Weapon .

comeback

On September 2, 2016, news was announced on the band's Facebook page. Nine days later, a date was announced in 2017. On September 22nd, this message was specified and a further announcement was made for October 14th. On the said day, the group announced that they had reunited and announced a joint concert with Paddock Park and All Your Friends Are Dead , who are also making their comeback, on February 17, 2017 in Ocala, Florida.

style

We Are Defiance played classic post-hardcore. Singer Brian Calzini acted as a screamer , while Daniel Hendrix mainly used clean vocals . Musically, the style of music is strongly reminiscent of A Day to Remember , but also of Paddock Park and Sleeping with Sirens .
