I Killed the Prom Queen is a metalcore band founded in Adelaide , South Australia in 2000 , which disbanded in 2008 and reunited in 2011.

Only Jona Weinhofen remains of the original line-up after JJ Peters decided to concentrate on his new band, Deez Nuts , in March 2013 . I Killed the Prom Queen are among the most famous metalcore bands in Australia, not least because of their intensive tours in Japan , North America and Europe . Before their interim break, the group released two albums, When Goodbye Means Forever (2003) and Music for the Recently Deceased (2006) - the latter rose to number 27 in the domestic charts . After the creative break, the third studio album followed in 2014 with Beloved .

In April 2007, the group temporarily separated after Jona Weinhofen joined Bleeding Through as bassist and JJ Peters founded the Deez Nuts project shortly afterwards. In mid-2008 the group got together again for a farewell tour through New Zealand and Australia. A live DVD was released under the title Sleepless Nights and City Lights , which landed at number 50 on the ARIA charts. In May 2011, the group announced that they would reunite for the Destroy Music Tour . Plans were also made to produce a new album to be released on February 14, 2014 under the title Beloved .

history

2000–2002: Founding and Choose to Love, Live or Die

I Killed the Prom Queen were founded in Adelaide , South Australia at the end of 2000. The first line-up consisted of Austin H ( vocals ), Jona Weinhofen ( electric guitar ), Simon O'Gorman (electric guitar), Ben Engel ( E -Bass ) and Josef John W Peters ( drums ). Peters, Weinhofen and the later bassist Leaton Rose played together in a local band called Cur. At the beginning of 2000, Weinhofen left Cur to found the band The Fall of Troy together with Michael Crafter . Then they formed the band I Killed the Prom Queen . The group was originally called The Rubiks Equation , after which they changed the name to Left Child Burning . Under this name they played their first show at the Reynella Youth Enterprise Center. A year later, Crafter joined the band as lead singer and Leaton Rose replaced Ben Engel as bassist.

Inspired by hardcore bands of the late 1990s such as Poison the Well , Converge , Hatebreed and Earth Crisis as well as Swedish -style death metal bands such as At the Gates , Soilwork and In Flames , the musicians decided at the end of the year 2001 to produce a first EP. The work, which the group financed itself, lasted until the beginning of 2002. The four-track EP is called Choose to Love, Live or Die and was produced by Paul Degasperi. The EP also features Cain Kapetanakis on electric guitar . Originally the EP was supposed to contain five tracks, but a glitch led to the fifth track being deleted entirely. The EP was released on the 618 Records label and was later reissued by Final Prayer Records . Shortly thereafter, O'Gorman left the group to play guitar on Day of Contempt. He was replaced by Kevin Cameron on guitar. Choose to Love, Live or Die is the only release on which Lee Stacey can be heard on the microphone. The pieces were later re-recorded on the EP Your Past Comes Back to Haunt You . This should appear in 2005.

2003–2005: Split with Parkway Drive and When Goodbye Means Forever

In March 2003 Leaton Rose left the band and was replaced by Sean Kennedy as bassist. Rose would later join The Hot Lies . Weinhofen, Peters, Cameron and Kennedy should from now on become a stable instrumental line-up, despite the constant change of singers in the coming years.

The first new song after their demo EP, Homicide , was released as part of the Harder Core than You compilation by Australian Blunt magazine . Crafter was in Byron Bay at the same time for the first concert of the local metalcore band Parkway Drive . He was so impressed that he invited the band to record a split CD. This split CD was released in May 2003 via Final Prayer Records . Both bands each recorded two songs for this EP. In September the group moved into the studio to record their debut album. Meanwhile the band was signed by Resist Records . It's called When Goodbye Means Forever and was released in December 2003. Producers were Dan Jones, Anj and the band itself.

In early 2004, the group toured with Evergreen Terrace , Boysetsfire and Give Up the Ghost by Australia . In March, When Goodbye Means Forever was reissued in the United States through Eulogy Records , resulting in an extensive tour of the United States. Shortly before a concert that the group was giving on the island of Hawaii , three musicians were asked because of their appearance which prisons they had been in and what their parents said about their tattoos.

After that, the group spent almost four months touring. During this period, I Killed the Prom Queen played in the opening act for bands like Caliban , It Dies Today , Evergreen Terrace , Lamb of God , Silverstein , Bleeding Through , The Red Chord , Fear Before the March of Flames , Until the End , The Warriors , Between the Buried and Me and On Broken Wings . On March 7th, 2005 the EP Your Past Comes Back to Haunt You was released . In addition to the new recordings of older songs, this EP also contained the title To Be Sleeping While Still Standing , which was recorded by The Fall of Troy (not to be confused with the American band of the same name ), the former band of Michael Crafter and Jona Weinhofen.

2005-2007: Music for the Recently Deceased

In August 2005 the group flew to Sweden to record their second album, Music for the Recently Deceased . The work was finished at the end of 2005, but the release of the album had to be postponed. The reason for this was that the musicians threw their previous singer, Michael Crafter, out of the band at the beginning of 2006 and were looking for a new singer who could re-record his vocal part on the album. The musicians found this in the British Ed Butcher, who was playing in The Hunt for Ida Wave at the time. Some of the lyrics were new by Butcher and Kevin Cameron, but some of the lyrics by Crafter were also retained. The album was produced by Fredrik Nordström , who has worked with Dimmu Borgir , Darkest Hour , At the Gates and In Flames , and Patrik J. Sten.

The album was finally released on July 31, 2006 via Stomp Entertainment and placed in the top 30 of the domestic charts . The accompanying Australia concert tour, which was supposed to promote the album, comprised about 50 appearances within three months, followed by support tours for the US bands Lamb of God and Killswitch Engage . The show at Luna Park in Sydney was attended by 3,500 people, where the group also played at the Come Together Music Festival . Shortly thereafter, Metal Blade Records released the album Music for the Recently Deceased in the United States. The group played at the New England Hardcore and Metal Festival . After their third tour of the United States , the group returned to Australia for another concert tour . This was accompanied by The Haunted and Exodus . In December 2006 the group headlined the Metal for the Brain Festival .

2007–2008: Separation and the Say Goodbye Tour

In January 2007 singer Ed Butcher flew back to the UK . The band announced that they had broken up with Butcher. Homesickness was given as the reason for leaving. Butcher later became the singer of the metalcore band Eternal Lord . The musicians Tyrone Ross from Mourning Tide were able to win as interim singer for the Japan tour . On the European tour with Bleeding Through , Caliban and All Shall Perish , Colin Jeffs from Heavens Lost performed the post of singer.

In April 2007, the band announced their split. There were several reasons: On the one hand, the musicians didn't manage to find a new singer. On the other hand, Jona Weinhofen left the band and joined Bleeding Through as a guitarist. A final tour of Australia was arranged. For this Michael Crafter returned to the microphone. In May 2008, on the occasion of the farewell tour, the album Music for the Recently Deceased was re-released in a counted edition of 5,000 records. The repressing included two live pieces and four songs recorded by Crafter. The tour took place in May and June 2008. Most of the 18 concerts were sold out. As support appeared Bring Me the Horizon , The Ghost Inside and The Red Shore on. The concert that the group gave in Adelaide was recorded for the production of a live album with an additional DVD. This album is titled Sleepless Nights and City Lights and was officially released on November 22, 2008. The album entered the top 50 of the charts . The group gave their last concert on June 7th, 2008 in Brisbane .

2008-2011: Hiatus

Shortly after the Say Goodbye Tour, Michael Crafter founded the hardcore band Confession with other musicians . He was also active as a singer for a short period in the bands Bury Your Dead and Carpathian . He was also a participant in the Australian version of the TV format Big Brother in 2008. Jona Weinhofen joined Bring Me the Horizon as a guitarist in 2009 . At Bring Me the Horizon he was also active as a background singer , keyboard player and programmer until he left in 2013 . Previously he was guitarist for Bleeding Through and manager of the Australian deathcore band The Red Shore .

Kevin Cameron founded the progressive metalcore band In Trenches with Ben Coyte . In addition, Cameron was a tour musician for various bands. JJ Peters founded the music project Deez Nuts in 2007 , which he now runs as his own band. He also founded the rap duo Grips & Tonic with the New Zealand musician Louie Knuxx . Sean Kennedy supported Deez Nuts as a guitarist on national and international concert tours.

Jamie Hope was the bassist for the deathcore band The Red Shore before taking up the position of singer. Since 2011 he has been the lead singer of the newly launched band I Killed the Prom Queen.

2011-today: Reformation and Beloved

In March 2011, I Killed the Prom Queen announced they were planning a reunion tour of Australia . The group toured with Deez Nuts , Of Mice & Men and The Amity Affliction in May . This concert tour was part of the Destroy Music Tour . Jamie Hope confirmed on Facebook that the start-up is planned for a longer period of time and not just for a tour. Hope replaced the previous singers Ed Butcher and Michael Crafter, who preferred not to join the band again. At this point Jona Weinhofen played both in Bring Me the Horizon and again in I Killed the Prom Queen.

In January 2012 Weinhofen announced that the group was working on new material for their third album. The band wants to move into the studio at the end of the year so that the album can be released in early 2013. However, this plan was discarded and a release date was postponed to 2014. In July 2012, the group played three concerts in the UK while a performance at the Sonisphere Festival had to be canceled. From the initial three shows, a 17-concert European tour developed through eleven countries. Weinhofen described the tour as something special, as the band is very well known in Europe .

On August 21, 2012, Memento Vivere, a new song by the band, was released on the video platform YouTube . The music video consisted of a collage from the last European tour in July. It is the band's first song since their six-year absence and also the first track with Jamie Hope as the lead singer. In December 2012 the band supported Parkway Drive on their Atlas Tour in Australia and New Zealand . In 2012 I Killed the Prom Queen played at several European music festivals. including the Earthshakerday Festival , the With Full Force and the Graspop Metal Meeting . At the With Full Force the band played on the main stage on Saturdays with Ektomorf , Excrementory Grindfuckers , Carnifex , Meshuggah , Cannibal Corpse , Immortal and Heaven Shall Burn . In January 2013, Bring Me the Horizon announced that they had separated from Weinhofen as a musician due to personal differences. A short time later, Jona Weinhofen announced that he would be back as a full member of I Killed the Prom Queen. On March 24, 2013, JJ Peters announced that he would retire from the band for good after having played for both Deez Nuts and I Killed the Prom Queen since the reunification . He wants to focus specifically on Deez Nuts in the future. He was replaced by Shane O'Brien, who previously played for Confession and Buried in Verona . So Jona Weinhofen is the only remaining founding member of I Killed the Prom Queen.

The band was the opening act for Asking Alexandria on their Don't Pray for Us tour with Whitechapel , Chimaira and Motionless in White , which led through the United States . This was the band's first appearance in the United States in seven years. This was followed by a tour through Australia with Buried in Verona as the opening act. In October 2013 the group toured for the first time as part of the Impericon Never Say Die! Tour of Europe . Hand of Mercy , Northlane , Hundredth , Betraying the Martyrs , Carnifex and Emmure also played on this concert tour . Sean Kennedy announced his departure from the band in July. Benjamin Coyte was signed to replace Kennedy. His first show with the band was at the Resurrection Fest in Spain .

On November 13, 2013 it was announced that the band had signed a worldwide record deal with Epitaph Records . Work on the new album with Fredrik Nordström has also been completed, so the album will be released in 2014. The musicians are also planning several concert tours to promote the new album. In the meantime the name of the album has been announced. It's called Beloved and it was released on February 18, 2014. In May 2014 I Killed the Prom Queen will tour with Breakdown of Sanity , The Ghost Inside , The Devil Wears Prada and Caliban as part of the “Progression Tour” through Germany , Austria , Switzerland , Italy and the Netherlands .

style

I Killed the Prom Queen plays typical metalcore as a mixture of hardcore and melodic death metal . In a few pieces the typical metalcore singing was supplemented by clean singing.

The band's sound is inspired by hardcore bands from the late 1990s such as Converge , Earth Crisis , Poison the Well and Hatebreed , as well as Swedish school death metal bands including In Flames , Soilwork and At the Gates . Compared to most metalcore bands, the sound is melodic.
