Graspop Metal Meeting
Graspop Metal Meeting is a metal festival in the Belgian town of Dessel , forty kilometers from Antwerp . It takes place in June every year. In 2008 the festival officially counted 135,000 visitors, making Graspop one of the largest metal festivals still taking place in Europe. New records were reached in 2016 (155,000 visitors, 106 bands) and 2018 (200,000 visitors, 117 bands).
history
Graspop was founded in 1986 as a local pop festival. With the success in 1993 and 1994, when bands like Motörhead , Ramones , Paradise Lost , Stratovarius and Biohazard performed, it was decided to give metal a wider space in the program. A short time later the festival was renamed "Graspop Metal Meeting (GMM)". The festival usually takes place on the penultimate weekend in June.
In the first year under the new name, the festival had over 10,000 visitors and 15 bands. In 2005 it celebrated its tenth anniversary with around 80,000 visitors. In 2007 there were over 100,000 visitors, and there were 60 bands on four stages. Practically every sub-genre of metal and hard rock was represented. In addition to the headliner Iron Maiden , u. a. also Slayer , Aerosmith , Children of Bodom and Ozzy Osbourne .
In 2008 the number of visitors reached a record 135,000 people and a lineup of around 70 bands; this included Iron Maiden, Judas Priest , Whitesnake and KISS , who filmed their next live DVD at the festival.
For the 15th anniversary in 2010, in addition to KISS, other bands such as Ratt , Immortal , Anvil and many others appeared as headliners . on.
The 20th anniversary was celebrated in June 2015 over four days on five stages with 109 bands. Among others, Faith No More , Morgoth and Septic Flesh made their first appearance on the grass pop. In 2018 the festival was completely sold out for the first time and, according to the operators, the festival had 200,000 visitors over four days. A year later it was again limited to three days.

The "Metal Dome" takes place every year to promote smaller and lesser-known metal bands.
In addition, there is merchandising with a wide range of CDs and DVDs on the festival site every year.
