Skyharbor is a multinational progressive metal band with members from India , Great Britain and the United States of America . The guitarist Keshav Dhar started the band in 2008 under the name Hydrodjent , which was based on the emerging Djent scene.

history

Origin (until 2009)

The band started as an instrumental solo project by the Indian musician Keshav Dhar. He came into contact with music for the first time at the age of six when his parents taught him to play the piano . A year before the start of college , Dhar became more interested in rock and heavy metal in 2003 and then began to play guitar. During his studies in biomedical engineering at Manipal University , inspired by other solo projects such as that of the guitarist Bulb alias Misha Mansoor, he began to produce music himself under the name Hydrodjent with the help of a computer . After completing his studies, Dhar moved to Delhi , where he presented his music in various Internet forums in order to listen to other people's criticisms of it.

Collaboration with other musicians & first live shows (2010-2011)

When Dhar was working on his first studio album , Daniel Tompkins, former singer of the band TesseracT , contacted him in October 2010 via the online community MySpace and showed his interest in his music. He offered him to contribute to his album with a guest appearance in Dhar's song Order 66 . Dhar sent him a large selection of songs that Tompkins loved so much that he took over the vocals on seven of the ten songs on the upcoming album. In February 2011 Dhar announced that he had renamed his project Skyharbor , as Djent was increasingly viewed as a genre of its own and no longer had the meaning of an onomatopoeia . A little later, the former Megadeth guitarist Marty Friedman became aware of Dhar's music project and made his contribution to the album with two guest appearances in the songs Catharsis and Celestial . In return, Dhar contributed to the recording of Friedman's solo album Tokyo Jukebox 2 .

In late October 2011, Dhar announced that US drummer Anup Sastry had joined the band. He had previously uploaded several drum covers for Dhar's songs to the Internet portal YouTube . The band's first album was supposed to be released in mid-November, but Keshav Dhar got in touch with the British record label Basick Records through a friend from the Rock Street Journal , where he signed a recording contract shortly afterwards , so that the release of the album was postponed by half a year has been. Shortly thereafter, the band played their first concert at the NH7 Weekender Festival , albeit without a singer. Nikhil Raj, also from India, took over the bass, while Anup Sastry traveled from the United States as drummer.

Release of Blinding White Noise: Illusion & Chaos (2012)

On April 23, 2012, the debut album Blinding White Noise: Illusion & Chaos was released via Basick Records in Europe , Australia and India. A day later, it was also available in North America through Prosthetic Records . The idea for the name of the album came from the lyrics of the first song Dots . The album was split into two CDs: the first, Illusion , contained the seven songs on which Daniel Tompkins played. The second CD was called Dhar Chaos . It contained three other songs, on which the Indian musician Sunneith Revankar of the band Bhayanak Maut , who was once traded as a permanent singer of Skyharbor, took over the vocals. Furthermore, in addition to Marty Friedman, the Indian guitarist Vishal J Singh could be heard with two guest contributions on the album.

At the end of May 2012, Skyharbor played a Lamb of God concert in Bangladesh in front of almost 8,000 spectators. Lamb of Gods drummer Chris Adler, who has been watching the band since the beginning, made the performance possible. It was also the first concert with a full line-up , as singer Daniel Tompkins traveled from England especially for this concert . The second guitar was taken over by the guitarist of the Indian band Goddess Gagged Devesh Dayal, who from then on played as a permanent member of the Skyharbor band. In the summer of 2012, the Indian label NH7 took over the sale of Blinding White Noise: Illusion & Chaos , making it easier for Indian fans to distribute the album. In October 2012 the band played alongside Scar Symmetry , After the Burial and Long Distance Calling at the Euroblast Festival , which takes place annually in Germany , and which was the band's first appearance outside of India.

Further development (since 2013)

At the end of June 2013, the band won a total of eight awards at the Metal Awards of the Indian edition of Rolling Stone . The band won in the "Best Band" category, with their debut album Blinding White Noise: Illusion & Chaos in the "Best Album" category and with the song Dots in the "Best Song" category, where they were recognized by both users and The jury , which included members of the bands Karnivool and The Black Dahlia Murder, were chosen as the winner. In addition, Keshav Dhar and Nikhil Rufus Raj were honored as best guitarist and best bassist, respectively. In July the band played at the three-day UK Tech-Metal Fest , where they appeared alongside bands like Scar Symmetry , Veil of Maya and Chimp Spanner . For the band it was the first gig in Great Britain, in which the drummer Anup Sastry could not participate and was replaced by Mike Malyan from the band Monuments , as he was on a North American tour with his other band Intervals . In September the band played two concerts with TesseracT and Monuments in Russia .

On June 23, 2015, Skyharbor announced via Facebook that the band had split up in friendship with their drummer Anup Sastry. In his place is Aditya Ashok. On June 29, 2015, it was announced on the homepage that singer and frontman Daniel Tompkins is leaving the band and will be replaced by Grammy-nominated producer, singer and multi-instrumentalist Eric Emery.

style

Inspired by the solo project Bulb by Misha Mansoor and Acle Kahneys TesseracT, Keshav Dhar came up with the idea of composing his own music at home on his own PC with the help of his guitar and various computer programs , on which the songs on Blinding White Noise: Illusion & Chaos are based, some of which were created four years ago before it was published. All the instruments that can be heard on the debut album were produced by Dhar at home on his own computer. When writing the songs on the album, Dhar said he always combined several guitar riffs into a single one. Then he saved this on the computer with the bass and drum tracks, as well as electronic effects and repeated this step until the result satisfied him. The idea of combining the music project, which was actually designed as an instrumental music project, with vocals came in 2009 when Dhar sent his first songs to singer Sunneith Revankar, who then mixed them with his vocals. The result can be heard on the second CD Chaos .

Joint recordings are planned for the second album.
