Chimp Spanner is an instrumental solo project by the British musician Paul Antonio Ortiz from Colchester , which combines Progressive and Technical Death Metal with ambient . There has also been a permanent live line-up since 2011.

The name of the project is derived from the 1997 song Monkey Wrench by the Foo Fighters . Ortiz used the synonyms "Chimp" ( English for "chimpanzee") for "Monkey" (English for "monkey") and "Spanner" for "Wrench" (both English for "wrench"). Because of this, the logo also depicts a monkey's head with two wrenches lying on top of each other. Ortiz first used the name shortly before founding his project as a user name on the SoundClick online platform .

history

The development of Chimp Spanner begins at a young age: As the child of a British mother and an American father, Paul Ortiz grew up in a very musical family, as both parents were musicians. He starts playing the piano between the ages of four and five and is already recording his first songs at the age of eight using a digital audio workstation . In 1998 he began to play the drums, then he learned to play the bass. Shortly before the end of college , at the age of 16, Ortiz learned to play the guitar, which led him to found his instrumental project Chimp Spanner.

In 2004 Paul Ortiz released his debut album Imperium Vorago , which he recorded and mastered himself at home on his own PC. Between 2005 and 2007 he repeatedly uploaded new songs to various Internet platforms, including the three-part song Terminus . In the summer of 2008 he announced that he had quit his job in Cambridge and moved back to Colchester, from where he was doing mastering for other musicians and bands to make a living.

In December 2009, At the Dream's Edge, the second studio album Chimp Spanners' was released, which was also available on CD on the band's official website. In March 2010 Ortiz announced that they had signed a recording contract with the British label Basick Records , which was re-released a month later on At the Dream's Edge . He also announced that he would like to perform live soon. At a concert to mark the fifth anniversary of Basick Records, the band played live for the first time, which for Ortiz was the first of his life. In October of the same year Chimp Spanner played next to the friendly band Monuments headlining on in Cologne held Euro Blast Festival . At both concerts, the members of Monuments helped out as a live cast, in return Ortiz performed as live guitarist the month after on their European tour with Winds of Plague , Stick to Your Guns and For Today . At the end of December 2010, Basick Records released the first album Chimp Spanner's Imperium Vorago on iTunes , which was previously no longer officially available.

In 2011 Ortiz announced that they had found a live line-up with guitarist Jim Hughes, Monuments bassist Adam Swan and drummer Boris Le Gal, with whom Ortiz had founded a music project called Blessed Inertia two years earlier . Several small tours followed with TesseracT , Uneven Structure and Cynic through Europe including Great Britain.

In February 2012 the band released their debut EP , All Roads Lead Here , which, in addition to the conventional CD, was also available as a record with bonus tracks. Between July and August of the same year, Chimp Spanner played their first tour through North America together with Jeff Loomis , The Contortionist and 7 Horns 7 Eyes . Since he couldn't take his usual line-up with him, he hired the guitarist of the band Ordinance Gregory Macklin and the drummer Anup Sastry ( Skyharbor , Intervals ) for the American tour. Both played in the live cast for Jeff Loomis during the tour.

Ortiz is currently working on the third studio album.

style

Chimp Spanner's style is a mix of modern metal and electronic music . In addition to representatives of progressive rock and metal, Ortiz also counts pioneers of synthesizer music among his influences, such as the Greek musician Vangelis or the British artist and music producer Brian Eno . The band is also an integral part of the Djent scene.
