7 Horns 7 Eyes (abbreviated: 7H7E ) is a Christian technical death metal band from Seattle, USA . The name of the band is derived from the seven-horned and seven-eyed sheep (Rev 5,6) from the Revelation of John . Furthermore, the band chose the name because the number 7 in the Bible stands for the omnipotence of God.

history

The band was formed in March 2006 from the high school rock band of the brothers Aaron and Brandon Smith, as well as singer Kyle Wood, guitarist Chris Weiford and drummer Steven Bye. The aim of the new band, which they named 7 Horns 7 Eyes, was to go musically more towards Heavy Metal . In summer 2007 the band released their first self-titled EP 7 Horns 7 Eyes , which they distributed themselves.

After Chris Weiford and Steven Bye left the band, guitarist Sean Alf and Kyle Wood's brother, drummer Ryan Wood, joined the band in 2009 after their band Dying to Live broke up. The band then played as part of the Christian metal band Demon Hunter's Stronger Than Hell tour . The separation from singer Kyle Wood followed in 2010, because he wanted to get married and start a new chapter in life. After more than half a year of searching for a new singer, the band came across JJ Polachek, whom they knew through an Internet forum. Due to the fact that the songs for the upcoming album had already been finished, the vocals had to be re-recorded with Polachek's voice. The lyrics of three songs, which were still by Kyle Wood, were rewritten because Polachek could not identify with their content.

In March 2011, the band signed a record deal with the German music label Century Media after guitarist Jeff Loomis , who was also from Seattle and who was friends with the band, established the connection with the company. A few days later the band announced that the band's first album would also be available in Europe via the British label Basick Records , in addition to North America . Between May and June 7 Horns 7 Eyes were on tour with Stealing Axion . In July 2011 the band released the download single Convalescence , which included three songs from the upcoming album.

In spring 2012 guitarist Sean Alf left the band, who was replaced by musician Zack Uidl. On April 23, 2012, the debut album Throes of Absolution was released in Europe, which was also available in North America a day later. The artwork for the album was designed by Travis Smith, who had already designed CD covers for Opeth and Devin Townsend . In addition, all instruments, with the exception of the drums, were recorded in Aaron Smith's own studio. Then the band went on tour through North America with Chimp Spanner , The Contortionist and Jeff Loomis.

In early 2013, the band had to cancel a planned tour through Canada with the band Annex Theory , which was partly due to the fact that the band's financial situation did not allow a tour at that time.

style

Between the first EP and the debut album, a change in the band's musical style is noticeable. While 7 Horns 7 Eyes was characterized by features of Metal and Deathcore , Throes of Absolution focuses on elements of Progressive and Melodic Death Metal in addition to the basic features of Technical Death Metal . In an interview, founding member and guitarist Aaron Smith justified this with the change of members in 2009.

Furthermore, the band does not officially designate itself as a Christian metal band. Although all members are devout Christians and the lyrics were all written from a Christian perspective, the band members see themselves with their music not as mediators of the Christian faith, but simply as musicians. In addition, the band does not want to be perceived as a Christian band in the first place, but the listener should first and foremost deal with the band, since Christian metal usually has to struggle with negative prejudices.
