history

Founding & supporting local bands (2005-2007)

In 2005 Nathan Phillips and his half-brother Jake Smith decided to start their own label in their hometown of Luton . The aim was to support local bands like Enter Shikari , who were still unknown at the time . As Nathan had already worked for AiRecords , a British label specializing in electronic music , between 2002 and 2005 and had already published some music there himself, he already had experience in the music business. From their parents' home they distributed their first compilations together and organized concerts in the area. With Fellsilent the label signed the first band, which released their debut EP The Double A on December 19, 2005 . Other publications followed, including by the post-hardcore band The Abner and the rock band Without Thought.

Concentration on progressive and technical death metal bands (2008-2010)

With the engagements of The Arusha Accord , No Made Sense and My Minds Weapon in 2008, the label now concentrated on bands from the progressive and technical death metal area. In the same year, Nathan's half-brother Jake Smith left the label to concentrate fully on his then band Our Divide. Lisa Coverdale became aware of the label in 2009 and offered Nathan support. Together with James Monteith, guitarist at TesseracT , she built the Hold Tight! PR, which has become an integral part of Basick Records and takes care of the label's marketing. Further publications followed in 2010, including by Bury Tomorrow , Ion Dissonance and Evita . In addition, the label celebrated five years of existence, on the occasion of which a concert was given in the founding city of Luton, where the band Chimp Spanner performed live for the first time. Furthermore, the label released a best of compilation, which was released for free download.

International upswing (2011–2012)

In early 2011 the label signed contracts with the Warner Music Group sales company ADA and the German label Century Media . While Century Media was solely responsible for the distribution in North America , ADA received the rights for the rest of the world and took over the sale of the music through leading retailers and Internet platforms. During the riots in England in 2011 , a Sony DADC warehouse in London burned down completely in August . In addition to many other independent labels , the full range of Basick Records fell victim to the flames. In November 2011 Basick Records signed the French artist Rémi Gallego, who mixes electronic music with guitar riffs under the name The Algorithm . In January 2012, the American record label Prosthetic Records took over distribution in North America. Through the takeover, Basick Records got into the system of the hardcore and metal distributor Red Distribution , which belongs to Sony , and was able to strengthen its position on the American market. The first Basick Records album distributed by Prosthetic was Chimp Spanners EP All Roads Lead Here .

Latest developments (since 2013)

As the occasion for the sixth edition of Record Store Day , which took place on April 20, 2013, the label released new editions of Chimp Spanners At the Dreams Edge , The Algorithms Polymorphic Code , Uneven Structures /02 and Skyharbors Blinding White Noise: Illusion & Chaos as a record , each limited to 500 pieces and available in selected record stores in Europe , especially in Great Britain. The backs of the vinyl covers were designed so that the label's logo could be seen when all four records were folded. In mid-June, the label announced that it would distribute the album Absent Light by the band Misery Signals , which was released at the end of July, in Europe, after the band had separated from their old label and more than doubled the target via the crowdfunding platform Indiegogo Sum for the recordings for the new album.
