The Contortionist is an American progressive metal band from Indianapolis , Indiana , which was founded in 2006 under the name Achilles Rising, renamed itself to At the Hands of Machines a year later and since another name change in 2008 under its current name occurs. The band is attributed to the Djent movement.

history

Singer Jake Morris, guitarists Robby Baca and Cameron Maynard, bassist Christopher Tilley and drummer Joey Baca met in high school and formed the band Achilles Rising in 2006. After renaming in 2007 to At the Hands of Machines, the band released their debut EP with Sporadic Movements , which the band distributed themselves. Shortly after the band renamed itself The Contortionist in 2008, singer Jake Morris left the band in the summer and was replaced by Dave Hoffman, who from then on supported the band on keyboards as well as vocals. In September of the same year, the band released their second EP, which was called Shapeshifter . A year later, Apparition, the band's third EP followed , with which the band distanced themselves from deathcore for the first time and came closer to technical death metal.

In March 2010, the band signed a record deal with the US record label Good Fight Music . During the recording of the first studio album, singer Dave Hoffman left the band for personal reasons, whereupon Jonathan Carpenter, a good friend of Hoffman, who the band already knew from the time they were formed and who had helped with the production of the third EP Apparition , joined the band . At the end of August the band released their debut album with Exoplanet , to which Jonathan Carpenter had made some changes during the recording as a result of the member change within a month in order to bring his own style into the album. Between April and May 2011 the band toured the USA alongside Arsonists Get All the Girls , A Plea for Purging and Volumes, followed by further tours through North America with bands such as Structures , Periphery and Textures in the summer . Then in November the band went on their first tour outside America through Australia with the band The Storm Picturesque .

After another US tour alongside Jeff Loomis , Chimp Spanner and 7 Horns 7 Eyes , the band released their second studio album, Intrinsic, in July 2012 , which, unlike its predecessor, was also available in Europe via the French record label Season of Mist . After the band toured the United Nations in November with Born of Osiris , Unearth and Obey the Brave , among others , singer Jonathan Carpenter left the band after he became engaged and was expecting a child. He was temporarily replaced by Michael Lessard of Last Chance to Reason , who helped out as a singer on two US tours with bands like After the Burial , Glass Cloud and Within the Ruins between March and April and was introduced as the band's new singer in June .

As part of the announcement of their third studio album, it was announced that bassist Christopher Tilley, who was leaving the band, will be replaced by Jordan Eberhardt and Eric Guenther will join the band on keyboards.

The album Language was released on September 16, 2014 .

style

The band uses seven-string guitars which are tuned down a semitone (A # D # G # C # FA # D #). The lyrics on the two studio albums deal with science fiction topics in which the entire band is particularly interested. The texts mainly deal with the question of how life outside the earth will be shaped in the distant future.

Others

Guitarist Robby Baca and drummer Joey Baca are twin brothers .
