history

Within the Ruins was founded in 2003 by Joe Cocchi ( electric guitar ), Kevin McGuill ( drums ) and Kyle Marcoux (electric guitar) in Westfield , Massachusetts . By 2005, Rafael Gonzales ( vocals ) and Arthur Pero ( electric bass ) joined two other musicians. In 2006 the band released their first EP, Driven by Fear, on Innerstrength Records . Since its inception, the group has gone through several line-up changes. Today the band consists of Tim Goergen (vocals), Joe Cocchi (electric guitar), Kevin McGuill (drums) and Andrew Tate (electric bass).

In 2008 a second EP followed with Empires , which was also released on Innerstrength. Through this EP, the group received an offer from Victory Records , which the band eventually signed. In February 2009, the band's debut album via Victory was released with Creature . In August 2010 the second studio album followed with Invade . Between 2011 and 2012 the group toured the United States and Europe several times. The group played at several larger festivals, such as the Bamboozle , South by Southwest , the New England Metal and Hardcore Festival , the Bonecrusher Fest and the Summer Slaughter Tour . For the Summer Slaughter Tour, the group recorded a third four-song EP called Omen . The group switched labels and signed with E1 Music . After three years, their third album, titled Elite , was released there in 2013 . This album made it into the national charts for the first time, at number 133. In July 2014, Phenomena, the band's fourth album, was released, which was also able to position itself in the album charts at number 72.

In November 2014 the band toured Europe with Suicide Silence , Emmure and Fit for a King . At the beginning of their North American tour as the opening act for Suicide Silence, their tour bus overturned. The musicians were not injured in this accident, but all instruments and the bus were completely destroyed. The group plans to continue the tour anyway.

At the end of February 2018, Tim Goergen gave up his position as the band's singer due to personal and health problems. Former Silence the Messenger singer Steve Tinnon was introduced as the successor .

style

On the debut album Creature , Within the Ruins played a metalcore-like sound with melodic inserts and occasional mosh parts. Reini from the Austrian Stormbringer describes the music style as a mixture of Metalcore, Technical Death Metal and Mathcore . Influences from Melodic Death Metal were also recognized on the album .

The group is attested to have a high level of technical finesse at its successor, Invade . However, this finesse is also cited as a disadvantage for the band's music. Due to their mix of different musical styles, it is not easy to classify the music of the group completely. The music on Invade is comparable to groups like Born of Osiris and Veil of Maya . Sebastian Berning from Powermetal.de described that the group at Invade starts where they left off with Creature . He describes the music as "fiddly and brutal deathcore" and as a "lukewarm variant of Ion Dissonance ". Berning comes to the conclusion that the group’s second album is simply being lost as a further album in the intersection between Death Metal and Metalcore , although the high technical demands are not bad, but do not want to ignite.

Even on Elite , the sound is comparable to Born of Osiris and Veil of Maya. The music is characterized by numerous breakdowns and constant changes within the song structure. However, the individual pieces lose their variety as a result. As on its predecessors, the group processed a lot of melodies in addition to some double bass and blast beats. On the fourth studio album Phenomena , the group is also given high technical standards. Above all, Joe Cocchi's guitar playing is praised. It is also described that the sound of the group snuggles closer and closer to Thrash Metal and even Djent .
