Periphery is a Founded in 2004, progressive metal - band with some metalcore -Einflüssen from Bethesda , Maryland . The band is characterized by the deep 7-string guitars, the 6-string bass and the mostly clear voice of the singer Spencer Sotelo.

history

In 2005 Misha ("Bulb") Mansoor founded the band Periphery. He started to record the first songs and started a video blog on YouTube and also created a profile on MySpace . Over time, Periphery attracted the attention of many metal fans as they made many of their songs available online and free to download . In addition, new video blogs kept appearing. Due to the great feedback, they decided to shoot more videos and record new songs, which ultimately led to great success.

Periphery went through a number of lineup changes. Originally Misha Mansoor played drums and guitar in the band but began looking for local talent. He found the drummer Jason Berlin and constantly switched to the guitar himself. Berlin planned to pursue other interests in Los Angeles and was replaced by Travis Orbin.

Between 2005 and 2009, Periphery worked with singers Jake Veredika, Casey Sabol and Christopher Barretto , slowly evolving from a Meshuggah-influenced sound to a more atmospheric, melodic sound, with a focus on innovative production.

In 2009 Travis Orbin left the band to pursue a career as a session drummer. He was then replaced by Matt Halpern.

On January 20, 2010, amid speculation that they had changed vocalist again, Periphery uploaded an album sampler with vocals by Spencer Sotelo, who was later announced as the new vocalist of Periphery. He replaced Chris Barretto, who was fired from the band because of personal differences.

When the labels Distort Inc. , Sumerian Records and Roadrunner Records became aware of the band, Periphery had the breakthrough. In 2010 they took part in the metal festival Summer Slaughter ; In addition, the debut album Periphery was released on May 28, 2010 , which is sold in the USA under the label Sumerian Records, in Canada by Distort Inc. and in Europe by Roadrunner Records. From July 16 to August 15, 2010 the band played on "The Trash and Burn Tour" alongside bands such as Born of Osiris and Kittie .

On July 6, 2011, Periphery announced on their MySpace blog that the band had split from guitarist Alex Bois. Their tour plans were not changed, however, and guitarists Mark Holcomb and Adam "Nolly" Getgood were hired to take on Alex's parts during the live shows until a permanent replacement was found.

On September 7, 2011, Periphery was announced as the opener for Dream Theater on their A Dramatic Turn of Events tour in Europe, which began in January 2012.

In October 2011, the band announced that Mark Holcomb was now a full-time guitarist.

In November bassist Tom Murphy decided to leave the band. Then Adam Getgood was assigned the role of bassist for the European tour with Dream Theater. The band also hired Mark's brother Jeff as a replacement bass player for their 2012 US tour.

On June 28, 2012, Periphery announced that Adam "Nolly" Getgood was an official member of the band. His role is primarily that of the bass player, but he would also contribute guitar parts in the studio.

The EP Clear , which was released on January 28, 2014, was described by Jake Bowen as an "experiment" to reflect the diversity of the different compositional styles of the band members. Each band member composed a title and took on artistic responsibility themselves.

In 2014 Mansoor composed two songs for Halo 2 Anniversary Original Soundtrack with the titles Breaking the Covenant and Follow in Flight .

In May 2016, the band announced their next album Periphery III: Select Difficulty , which was released on July 22nd of the same year. The first track of the new album, The Price Is Wrong, was also released . On June 24, 2016, another single called Flatline was released from the new album Periphery III: Select Difficulty . The third single called Marigold was released on July 8, 2016 , which also got a music video. The single Motormouth was released on July 14th . The other single The Way the News Goes… was released a day later. The remaining singles were released a little later.

On August 3, 2017, the band's bassist Adam "Nolly" Getgood announced that he was leaving the band, mainly to focus more on his career as a music producer.

On April 19, 2018, Periphery’s record label Sumerian Records announced that Periphery had separated from the record label. The band will release their next album on their own. On October 15, 2018, the band began recording their next album.

The single Blood Eagle was released on February 7, 2019 . Shortly afterwards it was announced that the new album is called Periphery IV: Hail Stan and will be released on April 5, 2019. On March 1, 2019, the second single Garden in the Bones was released .
