Season of Mist is a French independent label that specializes in rock and metal . The head office is in Marseille .

history

The label was founded in 1996 by Michael Berberian after completing his studies. Berberian had already organized concerts during his studies, at which he was asked more and more often about the bands' CDs. When the first demos appeared on CD, Berberian decided to first open a mail order business, from which the label emerged in 1996. The focus was initially on bands from the progressive black metal scene. Berberian described the 1999 record deal with Mayhem and the release of Grand Declaration of War as one of the label's greatest commercial successes . It cost the label and him a lot of money, which ultimately paid off for both Season of Mist and Mayhem. Other important publications of the 1990s for the company are … And Oceans and Deströyer 666 .

In 2001 the label opened an office in Philadelphia in collaboration with Renegade Records in order to have a presence in North America. Since 2004 this office has been run by Sean Pelletier, a former employee of Relapse Records . An important role in the selection of the bands the label signs up plays the question of whether Berberian and his staff personally like the music. In addition, the label attaches great importance to signing unknown bands, but always seeks the balance between risky releases by newcomers and commercially successful bands. In addition, the label oriented itself towards other sub-genres of heavy metal , according to Berberian just in time to ensure the company's survival on the market. Furthermore, Season of Mist in France includes the distributor SoundWorks, which works for labels such as Metal Blade Records , Prophecy Productions or Napalm Records and an Internet mail order company.

In 2007 Berberian founded the sub-label Underground Activists with the aim of signing underground bands there that did not fit the commercial direction of Season of Mist. The first release of the sub-labels was the debut album by Bestial Mockery titled Slaying the Life .

The label employed a total of 17 people at the end of 2008 and had around 100 bands under contract.
