Sinistro is a progressive doom metal band from Lisbon, founded in 2011 .

history

Sinistro were founded in Lisbon in 2011. The debut was released the following year via Raging Planet Records . The three musicians involved in the debut, drummer Paulo “P” Lafaia, bassist Fernando “F” Matias and the guitarist and singer “Y” appeared under the first letters of their first names, but referred to other projects such as We are the Damned , Besta and Mourning Lenore , in which the individual musicians participated. The self-titled debut album was released in 2012 and received high acclaim from critics. With the 2013 album Cidade , actress Patrícia Andrade joined the group as a singer.

For the third studio album, Ricardo "R" Correia was brought into the group in 2014 as a second guitarist. The album Semente was released in 2016 via Season of Mist , gained international recognition and was awarded by the Portuguese Loud! Magazine voted album of the year. The publication was followed by international appearances. Including a joint tour with Paradise Lost 2017 and appearances at the Roadburn Festival 2016 and the Graspop Metal Meeting 2017. The appearances were praised as particularly energetic and expressive. In particular, the appearance of Andrades was emphasized.

For the recordings of the fourth studio album "Y" left the group and was replaced by Rick Chain as guitarist. With the release of Sangue Cássia in 2018, all band members appeared under their full names. In support of the publication, the group made another European tour, this time mainly in the Scandinavian region .

style

The music played by Sinistro is assigned to the spectrum of Doom Metal. The music is described as particularly independent and cannot be assigned to any specific genre. An important aspect of the music is the singing introduced by Patrícia Andrade, which is seen in the tradition of the Portuguese recital singing Fado . The group is also associated with other genres. Style names such as alternative , post-rock , post-metal progressive and trip-hop are cited in reviews and different performers such as Portishead , Mogwai , Tool , dredg , Radiohead , Chelsea Wolfe , Darkher , Garbage , My Dying Bride and Candlemass are used as comparisons. The group, on the other hand, describes the style they play as Doom Rock, admitting in interviews that they cannot be clearly assigned to any genre.

“We'd say we're somewhere between Doom, Metal and Rock . We are probably somewhere in this 'trio', but at the same time we do not belong completely to any of the three in the traditional sense. Maybe we are in a 'no man's land', on the border. "

- Patrícia Andrade in an interview with metal1.info

The music played in this way describes the group as “a massive wall of guitars combined with dark keyboard layers and an emotional vocal performance”. In reviews, singing is often highlighted as expressive and emotional. In reviews, the singing is described as "universally emotional", "hauntingly atmospheric" and "charming", which "can convey both doom and seductive eroticism like a succubus ."

The rest of the music, in particular the guitar playing, which is associated as sluggish and raw, is seen in contrast to the emotional singing and melodic keyboard arrangements. The keyboard arrangements are made close to trip-hop. The band constantly balanced atmospheric contrasts “The band masters the amalgamation of slowness and restlessness, of lamentation and anger, simplicity and break in style.” Meanwhile, the contrast between the melodic elements of vocals and keyboard versus the occasionally dissonant instrumentation. “In between, Sinistro experiment with psychedelic piano passages, either wreck the keys with all their might or play lovely melodies. Elsewhere there are sawing guitars whose dissonance is reminiscent of the Nordic coldness of Black Metal. "
