Altfrid Sicking

Altfrid Maria Sicking (born May 28, 1960 in Essen ) is a German jazz and entertainment musician ( vibraphone , marimba ).

Sicking, who grew up in Ahaus , first learned the recorder and clarinet , and later the piano. During puberty he played electric bass and keyboards in rock and jazz rock bands. In 1978 he turned to drums and, after graduating from high school, from 1979 to 1985 he completed a classical percussion course at the Musikhochschule Dortmund (artistic maturity examination). With workshops with Stefan Bauer , David Friedman , Gary Burton , Hendrik Meurkens , Keiko Abe and Dave Samuels, he deepened his instrumental knowledge.

Sicking played percussion in musicals like Les Misérables or Joseph and vibraphone in jazz-pop-rock bands like Free on Board , before Götz Alsmann brought him into his band (he has been a permanent member of the Götz-Alzmann-Band since 2005). There were also concerts with the WDR Big Band , Lee Konitz , Gerd Dudek , Charlie Mariano , Knut Kiesewetter , Greetje Kauffeld , Silvia Droste , Romy Camerun and recordings with Electric Brew, Die Fantastischen Vier , Nelsons Wedding, Blackmail and Ansgar Specht. He recorded an album with Christoph Spendel called Just Friends . Since 2007 he can also be seen with Markus Paßlick and his Original Pumpernickel. He also runs Sicking's Jazz Lounge in Bad Bentheim four times a year , where he introduces musicians such as Jasper van't Hof or Tobias Sudhoff .

Since 2000 Sicking has been working as an author for the magazine Drums & Percussion on the subject of improvising on mallet instruments . He is currently also a lecturer at the Musikhochschule Münster and the Folkwang University in Essen.
