history

Bad Bentheim was first mentioned in a document around 1050 as a binithem . There are various speculations about the etymology. The name could come from the rushes that used to grow there in the boggy landscape. It is also assumed that the name goes back to the Tubanten , as with the Dutch region of Twente .

Bad Bentheim, a former count's residence, looks back on a history rich in tradition. The market town was the center of the county of the same name for centuries . Under Prussian rule, Bentheim was an office and from 1857 to 1973 the location of a local court . In 1945 the British military government revoked Bentheim's status as a district town and relocated the district seat to the geographically more central city of Nordhorn .

The town's landmark is the mighty castle complex of the Counts of Bentheim: Bentheim Castle , which was first mentioned in documents around 1116. Healing sulfur springs were discovered around 1711 , from which a spa (thermal brine specialist clinic) developed. Bentheim has had town charter since 1865.

After the Second World War , the Netherlands had plans to annex large parts of north-west Germany to the Netherlands ( Bakker-Schut Plan ), including Bentheim. However, these plans were not implemented.

Since June 6, 1979 the city is called Bad Bentheim. The district of Gildehaus has been a state-approved resort since 1982.

As Bentheimer gold one called the Bentheim sandstone , who was promoted to the Bentheimer and Gildehauser pits and will be funded in part today. The trade (15th to 18th centuries) spread it beyond the borders of the County of Bentheim into the Münsterland , East Frisia, the Netherlands and as far as Belgium and Denmark. Important buildings made of Bentheim sandstone are for example the Royal Palace in Amsterdam , the theater and the Frauenkirche in Antwerp , the Catholic Church in Aarhus , the tower of the Martini Church in Groningen, completed in 1482, and the town hall in Münster . Allegedly the base of the Statue of Liberty in New York City is also made of Bentheim sandstone, but other cities such as Obernkirchen also make the claim that the base is made of the sandstone of their city.

Incorporations

As part of the municipal reform in Lower Saxony, the city of Bentheim, the joint municipality of Gildehaus (consisting of the member municipalities of Gildehaus , Achterberg, Hagelshoek, Holt and Haar , Waldseite and Westenberg) and the municipalities of Bardel and Sieringhoek were merged to form the unified municipality of Bentheim on March 1, 1974 .

Mayor

According to the main statute of the city, the districts of Achterberg, Bardel, Hagelshoek, Holt and Haar, Sieringhoek, Waldseite and Westenberg each form localities for which a mayor is appointed. They have the task of supporting the city administration and the council bodies in all questions that affect their locality.

coat of arms

The city of Bad Bentheim received its coat of arms in 1661 from Count Ernst Wilhelm von Bentheim and Steinfurt (1643–1693). The coat of arms shows a golden monogram of the letters E and G on a red background. This is surrounded by nineteen golden balls. The letters E and G stand for "Ernestus Guilelmus"; the Latinized name of the count. The golden balls come from the coat of arms of the Grafschaft Bentheim district ; However, where the coat of arms of the district comes from is unclear. The coat of arms of the district, and thus of the golden balls, is also used in coats of arms other than that of Bad Bentheim, for example in those of Nordhorn , Neuenhaus , Herzlake , De Wijk , Geldermalsen (both NL) and in the city flag of Neuss .

In the early 19th century, the use of the coat of arms was prohibited. Later, towards the end of the 19th century, the coat of arms consisted only of the red background with 18 golden balls on it - without a monogram! In 1955 the city received approval from the Lower Saxony Ministry of the Interior to re-use the coat of arms that was given to it by Count Ernst Wilhelm in the 17th century.

Town twinning

Bad Bentheim maintains town twinning with Assen in the Netherlands (since 1959) and with the town of Wolkenstein (Ore Mountains) in Saxony (since 1991).

Culture and sights

Attractions

Castle walls with a powder tower behind
Castle courtyard

The city's most striking landmark, Bentheim Castle , is clearly in the center. The old residence can be partially visited with and without a guide. The high keep, also known as the Powder Tower , offers a wide view of Bad Bentheim .

The Bad Bentheim Sandstone Museum is a museum housed in a historic Bentheim farmhouse with an extension building, which aims to bring the history of Bentheim sandstone (mining and use, trade and work) and the geology of this sandstone closer. Exhibits such as Romanesque baptismal fonts from the 12th and 13th centuries or fossils to illustrate the two permanent exhibitions can be viewed here.

The Museum am Herrenberg exhibits paintings by Dutch masters that are represented in at least two famous museums around the world. It provides an overview of Dutch painting in the 17th to 19th centuries. From the 17th century, the golden age , u. a. a painting by Jacob van Ruisdael with the motif Burg Bentheim is shown.

A very special kind of theater is located right next to the so-called Franzosenschlucht : The Bentheimer Freilichtbühne . The theater is located in three disused quarries and therefore offers an extraordinary natural backdrop. In the summer months, classic and modern plays for both adults and children are performed here. In addition, there are often special events such as winter and night performances or guest performances.

The Westerhoff house is considered to be one of the most beautiful farm bourgeois houses in the city, dating from 1656; it was expertly restored between 1989 and 1991. Today, artists and artisans exhibit their work there.

Also worth seeing is the Evangelical Reformed church with its Calvinist furnishings , in which Count Arnold II of Bentheim-Tecklenburg is buried. It was built in 1696 on the foundations of the early Gothic church from 1321, of which only fragments, such as a Gothic room and the Count's crypt below, have been preserved. Today it is a simple baroque church with an old stone pulpit in the center. In the cemetery around the church there are centuries-old tombs of art historical importance.

The Roman Catholic Church of St. John the Baptist with its baroque interior is located west of the palace park and dates from the time of the Counter Reformation. At the behest of Count Ernst Wilhelm von Bentheim, it was built from Bentheim sandstone in 1670. The building looks rather simple on the outside, but inside there are magnificent, early Baroque altars and remains of the original glazing in the windows of the north wall. The church was consecrated in 1676. Four bells hang in the tower, the Johannesglocke, the Marienglocke, the Michaelsglocke and the Ludgerusglocke.

Other attractions are:

  • Evangelical Old Reformed Church (1896)
  • Martin Luther Church (1912)
  • Bardel Monastery
  • Nature-ecological Dutch holiday reserve Gut Langen
  • Bentheim Forest
  • Bentheim Mountains
  • Otto Pankok Museum in Gildehaus

On these night tours through Bad Bentheim, both stories and legends about the city and the castle as well as historical data and facts give an insight into the city's history.

The so-called " taking away " is an old tradition that is still occasionally maintained in Bad Bentheim and the county, as well as in neighboring Emsland and Osnabrücker Land. The "Weggen" is a meter-long raisin bread that friends and neighbors bring after the birth of a child to celebrate the arrival of the baby. The "Weggen" is carried on a ladder.

The Bad Bentheim Christmas market is held on the second weekend of Advent in December . Special attractions include an old steam carousel and one of the twin city Wolkenstein donated Christmas pyramid , which in 2010 by visitors to the website of the MDR was elected to the "Top 10" of the Great Pyramids in Germany.

Castle Park

The so-called “castle park” below the castle is a geometric, 12-hectare park that was laid out according to old records in the style of princely gardens from the 18th century. There is a lake in the northern part of the facility. In summer there is a water fountain in the castle park, which shoots up in a shallow basin made of sandstone. This larger fountain is surrounded by symmetrically arranged rose beds lined with hedges.

In winter, the steep slopes in the southern part of the facility directly below the castle serve as a toboggan run. From 2006 to 2016 there was a high ropes course in the south-western part , not far from the playground for children. This could not be operated profitably and has since been dismantled. In the West, the large car park of the palace garden, find the summer and autumn carnival , large urban schützenfest and on the last Saturday of August an international flea market. In the castle park itself, a medieval market with a knight tournament takes place around May 1st. There is also a handicapped-accessible mini golf course in the castle park .

Rail transport

Railway station in Bad Bentheim, design and execution: Franz Ewerbeck , 1865/66

The Bad Bentheim station at the Almelo-Salzbergen railway has made since the cancellation in the 1950 decommissioning of the station Gildehaus the last station before the German-Dutch border. Until the opening of the EU internal borders after the entry into force of the Schengen Implementing Agreement , it was therefore also used for customs clearance of cross-border trains.

Since the line was continuously electrified in 1976 , the Dutch (1500 V = ) and the German (15 kV, 16.7 Hz ~ ) traction current systems have come together at this station . For this reason, the overhead line over the station tracks can be switched between the two systems. In Bad Bentheim, trains that are hauled by electric locomotives without the option of changing systems have to be changed, whereby the German and Dutch locomotives, in contrast to other system change stations, can each maneuver to or from the train on their own.

In regional transport, the Wiehengebirgs-Bahn ( RB 61 ) runs in Bad Bentheim via Rheine , Osnabrück and Herford to Bielefeld and, since January 2018, via Oldenzaal to Hengelo . The hourly trains can be used without a separate ticket for the Dutch section with the Westphalian tariff and the Lower Saxony tariff.

In long-distance traffic , InterCitys on IC line 77 run across borders on the Amsterdam - Bad Bentheim - Osnabrück , Hanover - Berlin route .

Between December 2010 and December 2013, the Bentheimer Eisenbahn operated a regional train line every hour (referred to as the Grensland Express ) in cooperation with the Dutch transport company Syntus as part of a pilot project. There was a direct connection between this line and the RB 61 in Bad Bentheim. Due to a lack of demand, this train connection was discontinued. Since January 14, 2018, trains of the RB 61 have been running continuously from Bielefeld to Hengelo.

The Bentheimer Eisenbahn AG route runs via Bad Bentheim from Achterberg (from Gronau until 1981 ) via Nordhorn and Neuenhaus to Coevorden in the Netherlands. The former administration building of this railway company is also located near the train station. The Bentheimer Eisenbahn has modernized its rail network with financial support from the Lower Saxony Regional Transport Company (LNVG) so that the local rail passenger transport (SPNV) from Bad Bentheim via Nordhorn to Neuenhaus can be operated again. The scheduled local rail transport was started as RB 56 on July 7, 2019.

The redesigned station area and reception building were reopened in December 2018.

Bus transport

Regional buses of the Bentheimer Eisenbahn (tariff area Verkehrsgemeinschaft Grafschaft Bentheim / VGB) connect Bad Bentheim with Gildehaus , Gronau (Westphalia) and Schüttorf (line 60) as well as Nordhorn (line 40) on weekdays as well as Sundays and public holidays . From spring to autumn, buses carry bicycle trailers on the Emlichheim – Neuenhaus line at certain times (Fietsenbus) .

Long-distance buses from Flixbus u. a. to Dortmund and Frankfurt am Main.

Road traffic

The city is on federal highway 403 . Furthermore, Bad Bentheim is connected to the trunk road network via the federal motorways 30 ( Bad Oeynhausen - Osnabrück - Bad Bentheim; in the Netherlands further as Rijksweg 1 (A 1) via Hengelo to Amsterdam ) and 31 ( Emden - Bottrop ) .

Personalities

Honorary citizen

After the Second World War, the city of Bentheim tried to restore the good relationship it had with the Netherlands. In this endeavor, the city was very much supported by the Dutch professor Hendricus Prakke. For this he was made honorary citizen of the city in 1966. Prakke, who died in 1992, was a citizen of the city of Assen , with which Bad Bentheim has had an intensive city partnership since 1959.

Hans-Carl Deilmann was also given the honor of being a citizen of the city. His company, Deilmann AG (now KCA Deutag), which employed over 8,000 people worldwide in the 1970s, played a key role in the economic upswing in Bentheim and the county. Deilmannstrasse was named in his honor.

  • The place gained national attention due to a planning error in 2016. Due to the barrier-free conversion of the station, the platform was increased to 76 cm. However, the doors of the station building were not raised, so that the new platform blocked them. Although it was possible to reach the platform barrier-free over a longer route from the outside, many chose the shorter route through the window. The necessary renovation of the station building was completed in December 2018.
