building

The first district court in Bad Bentheim was at Wilhelmsstrasse 43. The prison was also nearby. The district court was used from 1857 to 1900. When the premises became too small, a new district court was built from Bentheim sandstone on Schüttorfer Straße. It was completed in 1899 and moved into in 1900.

The new building has largely been preserved in its original state today. The prison complex attached to the district court could accommodate up to 30 prisoners. It was closed in 1950 and then rebuilt. The courtroom was modernized in the mid-1960s. For this purpose, the barriers were removed, the accessories area and the judges' table were modernized, and local coats of arms and some symbols of Justitia were removed.

On July 1, 1973, the district court was closed. The tax office temporarily used the house until the tax authorities moved.

The building is a listed building and is privately owned.
