District reforms in the Federal Republic of Germany until 1990

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The article District reforms in the Federal Republic of Germany up to 1990 covers the area reforms carried out at district level, i.e. the independent cities and districts, from the establishment of the Federal Republic in 1949 until the incorporation of the GDR in 1990 . On October 2, 1990, there were 237 rural districts (including the Saarbrücken city association ) and 91 independent cities in what was then the Federal Republic of Germany. For the sake of clarity, the article is arranged by country. For each country , a list shows when and how the number of independent cities and districts has changed.

The terms such as integration or enlargement do not refer to the legal situation, but to the generally accepted regulation. Often it is a matter of associations , which are nevertheless not understood in this way by the majority of the population, even in the integrated circle . Therefore, the continuation or the reassignment of a name is the decisive criterion here. The legal regulation, whether it is an amalgamation or an incorporation / incorporation or has acted, is only of immediate importance. After a few years it is meaningless. Reference is made to specific articles where further information can be found.

The state of Baden-Württemberg was created on April 25, 1952 through the merger of the states of Baden , Württemberg-Baden and Württemberg-Hohenzollern .

The only district (area) reform in Baden-Württemberg took effect on January 1, 1973. All other changes to the county boundaries listed here are due to minor, non-fundamental reforms, which were mainly municipal area reforms. Usually congregations were incorporated into existing congregations, sometimes a new congregation was also formed.

As early as January 1, 1969, a number of exclaves at the district level had been cleared up by state law (see also: Territorial peculiarities in southwest Germany after 1810 ).

When the country was founded, the following urban and rural districts existed:

City districts: Baden-Baden , Freiburg im Breisgau , Heidelberg , Heilbronn , Karlsruhe , Constance , Mannheim , Pforzheim , Stuttgart and Ulm

Bavaria

The Free State of Bavaria has belonged to the Federal Republic of Germany since May 23, 1949.

The only district (area) reform in Bavaria took place on July 1, 1972. All other changes to the county boundaries listed here are due to minor, non-fundamental reforms, which were mainly municipal area reforms. Sometimes congregations were incorporated into existing congregations, and sometimes a new congregation was formed.

The Free State had left it to the newly formed districts to change their names and / or to relocate the seat of the district administration. Many districts made use of the option to change their names. Two districts changed the seat of the district administration at the same time. These measures came into force nationwide on May 1, 1973.
