Lichtenhain is a district of the city of Gräfenthal in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district in Thuringia .
location
At 650 meters above sea level, Lichtenhain is the highest district of Gräfenthal. It can be reached via the state road 1150 and a serpentine feeder road . The district lies in the Thuringian Slate Mountains . The high plateau with the corridor of the district is heavily cropped and surrounded by forest. The neighboring town to the east is the town of Ludwigsstadt with its Ebersdorf district in Bavaria .
The Rennsteig runs just a few km east of the village. The medieval mountain village church has retained its original character to this day and is well worth seeing.
history
Lichtenhain was first mentioned in a document on June 29, 1414.
Until 1990 the place was in the immediate vicinity of the inner-German border , in the so-called 500 m protective strip (5 km restricted area in the border area between GDR and FRG), and was the stationing place of the 11th border company (3rd border battalion) Grenzregiment 15 ( Sonneberg ) of the Border troops of the GDR . In the village, between the two border fences of the security systems of the GDR, the command post with the 1st alarm group was located in a BT9 (observation tower). plus a BT11 on the so-called apron. In February 1985 the 15th border regiment was reorganized. From this point on it was the 7th border company in the 2nd border battalion of the 15th border regiment.
Note: The 500 m protective strip was part of the 5 km restricted area on the inner-German border. Additional restrictions applied to temporary and permanent stays in this protective strip.
In March 1976, the Kleinlichtenhain district was assigned to the Kleintettau community in the Kronach district ( Bavaria ).
On April 9, 1994, the community of Lichtenhain bei Gräfenthal was incorporated into the city of Gräfenthal.

Economy and tourism
Forestry and ecological agriculture , along with gentle tourism, are the source of income for the 100 inhabitants in the village. Hikes are enjoying increasing popularity, especially among our Dutch fellow citizens, to the nearby Rennsteig and along the former inner-German border between Bavaria and Thuringia, for example to the nearby Ratzenberg with the Thuringian observation point .
