The Red Mountain is 799.2  m above sea level. NHN high mountain west of Spechtsbrunn in the district of Sonneberg in the Thuringian Slate Mountains . The Rennsteig leads north past the summit at the Brandwiese (774 m). Here is a former slate quarry, the fire, today a mountain inn with Finnhütten .

Its western neighbor is the Hohe Schuß (824.6 m), one of the highest elevations in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district . The Rote Berg runs south in the Pfannstiel (764 m) and is therefore counted as part of the Southern High Slate Mountains . Its northern foothills, including the Steinerne Reiter (725.5 m), which extend into the urban area of Graefenthal , are included in the Northern High Slate Mountains . In the east of the massif, at its south-eastern foothills Winterberg (726 m) and its northern continuation Zimmerhügel (724.5 m) near Spechtsbrunn, the Alte Heerstraße ("Biel") crosses the Rennsteig, the south the foothills Cold Kitchen (723 m) and Glass hill (741 m) passes the transition to the Franconian Forest .
