The hamlet of Sommersdorf is located on a high plateau-like hill in the Thuringian Slate Mountains . The usable area is in the middle of the forest. The access road branches off from Landesstraße 1098 and is crossed by the Sommersdorfer Viaduct of the Probstzella – Neuhaus railway on Rennweg .

The hamlet was first mentioned in a document on April 23, 1394. Currently (2012) 53 people live in the village.
