About this picture

The district of Meschede was from 1819 to 1974 (until 1832 under the name of Eslohe district ) a district in the administrative district of Arnsberg . With that he first belonged to the Prussian province of Westphalia and from 1946 to North Rhine-Westphalia . From 1939 to 1969, the district was called Meschede District . The district town was Meschede after the seat of the district had been moved from Eslohe to Meschede in 1819 .

geography

location

The district was in the middle east of the Sauerland .

Neighboring areas

In 1974 the district of Meschede bordered in a clockwise direction in the northwest on the districts of Arnsberg , Lippstadt , Brilon , Wittgenstein and Olpe . Until June 30, 1969, it also bordered what was then the Lüdenscheid district , which had emerged from the Altena district six months earlier .

history

In 1817 the administrative district of Arnsberg was divided into districts. The former district of Fredeburg in the west also belonged to the Medebach district formed in this way. Since the district town on the eastern border was difficult to reach from there, especially in winter, and there were repeated complaints as a result, major changes were made as early as 1819. The Eslohe district was newly formed, the Medebach district was divided into the Brilon and Eslohe districts and the Arnsberg district was greatly changed.

On January 1, 1819, the parishes of Meschede, Eversberg, Velmede, Calle, Remblinghausen, Eslohe, Oedingen, Cobbenrode, Reiste, Schliprüthen, Wenholthausen, the branch locations of the parish of Schönholthausen in the Eslohe office were merged with the western part of the Medebach district to form the new Eslohe district . District Administrator Christian Adolf Wilhelm Pilgrim was transferred from Medebach to Eslohe.

Since the district administrator in Eslohe could not find suitable premises, the seat of the district was relocated - initially for the time being - from the more centrally located Eslohe to Meschede in December 1819. On September 2, 1832, "the city of Meschede was now definitely determined to be the district capital" and the Eslohe district was renamed Meschede.

On January 1, 1832, the localities Hohenwibbecke , Lenscheid, Saal and Wildewiese from the Eslohe district were incorporated into the Arnsberg district.

The circle Meschede was in the 1830s in the mayors Eslohe, Eversberg, Fredeburg, Schmallenberg and Serkenrode and the mayor districts Calle, Drasenbeck , Gellinghausen , Meschede, Remblinghausen and Stockhausen divided. As part of the introduction of the rural community order for the province of Westphalia, the district was divided into the offices of Bödefeld, Eslohe , Eversberg , Fredeburg , Meschede , Schmallenberg and Serkenrode in 1843 . As early as 1844, the Bödefeld office was dissolved again and incorporated into the Fredeburg office.

Between 1844 and 1974 there were the following changes in the administrative structure of the district:

On October 1, 1969, the district became the district of Meschede.

With the Sauerland / Paderborn law , the district of Meschede was dissolved with effect from January 1, 1975. Its area was merged with that of the Arnsberg and Brilon districts to form the Hochsauerlandkreis .
