history

During the seizure of the Rhineland by Prussia after the Second Peace of Paris in April 1815 were in the Rhine provinces administrative regions formed in circles were divided, at the head - first provisionally - district administrators were. With the second decree on the organization of the Rhine provinces of November 9, 1815, the administrative district of Aachen was set up as part of the "Northern Province of Kleve-Berg". A few days later there was a reorganization, as a result of which this administrative district of Aachen became part of the Grand Duchy of Lower Rhine , which also included the administrative districts of Koblenz and Trier belonged.

On May 1, 1816, the Gemünd district in the Prussian province of the “Grand Duchy of Lower Rhine”, Aachen district, was formed from fourteen mayor's offices that had previously belonged to the French cantons of Gemünd and Schleiden:

With the dissolution of the Blankenheim district in 1818, another 12 mayorships came to the Gemünd district:

The ten mayorships of Dahlem, Hellenthal, Hollerath, Kall, Kronenburg, Reifferscheid, Schleiden, Udenbreth, Wahlen and Wollseifen had a special position between 1816 and 1819. During the French period they belonged to the three cantons of Kronenburg, Reifferscheid and Schleiden. These three cantons were ceded by Prussia to the Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz in a secret treaty on September 18, 1816 , but were still administered by Prussia. In 1819 Prussia bought these areas back for 1 million thalers.

In 1820, the Gemünd district covered an area of 15.03 square miles. The statistics for the years 1817/18 show 161 churches and prayer houses, 44 public and 7,988 private buildings. It had 29,424 inhabitants, of which 1,345 were Protestants and 140 were Jews. District Administrator of the Gemünd district was the lord of Burg Eicks , Clemens August Freiherr von Syberg (* December 8, 1754, † April 21, 1833). The administration rooms were in "Bäckergässchen" in Gemünd, where the district secretary Schröder worked.

By 1827 the number of mayor's offices had been reduced from the original 26 to 23:

  • The mayor's office in Dahlem was abolished and incorporated into the mayor's office in Kronenburg.
  • The Reifferscheid mayor was abolished and incorporated into the Hellenthal mayor.
  • The mayor's office Wollseifen was abolished and incorporated into the mayor's office in Dreiborn.

The district office was relocated from Gemünd to Schleiden on October 24, 1829, and on November 29, the Gemünd district was renamed Schleiden district by a ministerial decree due to the “Highest Cabinet Order” . After the retirement of the district administrator of Syberg, Schleiden came into focus as the intersection of the planned highways from Koblenz and Trier and to Aachen and was able to offer corresponding administrative rooms in the vacant ducal-Arenberg castle Schleiden .
