The Selfkantkreis Geilenkirchen-Heinsberg was a district in the former administrative district of Aachen . With this he belonged first to the Rhine Province and from 1946 to North Rhine-Westphalia . Since January 1, 1972, his area has been in the district of Heinsberg and the city region of Aachen . The administrative seat of the Selfkantkreis was in Geilenkirchen.

The Selfkantkreis Geilenkirchen-Heinsberg bordered clockwise in the north, starting with the counties Erkelenz , Jülich and Aachen . The Dutch province of Limburg joined in the west .

With the exception of the time under Dutch administration, the district area included the Selfkant , the westernmost area of Germany.
history
On 1 October 1932, the parties were Geilenkirchen and most of the Heinsberg district to district Geilenkirchen Heinsberg together. In the period that followed, the administrative structure changed several times:
- On January 1, 1935, the Setterich community moved from the Jülich district to the Geilenkirchen-Heinsberg district.
- The communities Frelenberg , Scherpenseel and Übach were merged in 1935 to form the community Übach-Palenberg .
- Schümmerquartier was renamed Schümm in 1936 .
- On April 23, 1949, seven Selfkants municipalities ( Havert , Hillensberg , Höngen , Millen , Süsterseel , Tüddern and Wehr ; also the Gangelter district of Mindergangelt ) were spun off from the district and placed under the Dutch administration.
- In 1951, the district was named Selfkantkreis Geilenkirchen-Heinsberg to officially document that the Dutch occupation of Selfkant would not be accepted as permanent since World War II .
- Beggendorf was incorporated into Baesweiler in 1952 .
- The communities Breberen and Schümm were merged on January 1, 1963 to form the community Breberen-Schümm .
- On August 1, 1963, the municipalities of Selfkants, which had ceded to the Netherlands in 1949, were reintegrated into the district.
- The municipality of Übach-Palenberg received city rights in 1967.

As part of the North Rhine-Westphalian regional reform, the four municipalities of the Office Oberbruch-Dremmen were initially merged on January 1, 1969 to form the new municipality of Oberbruch-Dremmen . On July 1, 1969, the law on the reorganization of communities in the Selfkant district of Geilenkirchen-Heinsberg came into force:
- Breberen-Schümm, Schierwaldenrath and Birgden were incorporated into the community of Gangelt.
- Havert, Hillensberg, Höngen, Millen, Saeffelen, Süsterseel, Tüddern and Wehr were merged to form the new municipality of Selfkant .
- Aphoven, Schafhausen and Unterbruch were incorporated into the city of Heinsberg.
- The offices of Gangelt, Heinsberg-Land, Selfkant and Waldenrath were dissolved.
On January 1, 1972, further municipalities were amalgamated by the Aachen Act and the district dissolved:
- Baesweiler, Oidtweiler, Puffendorf and Setterich were merged into a new municipality of Baesweiler.
- Geilenkirchen, Teveren, Lindern, Beeck, Immendorf, Süggerath and Würm were merged into a new city of Geilenkirchen.
- Heinsberg, Karken, Kempen, Kirchhoven, Oberbruch-Dremmen, Randerath and Waldenrath were merged into a new town of Heinsberg.
- Brachelen became part of the city of Hückelhoven .
- Braunsrath, Haaren and Waldfeucht were merged to form a new municipality of Waldfeucht.
- Birgelen, Effeld, Ophoven, Orsbeck and Wassenberg were merged into a new municipality of Wassenberg.
- The Selfkantkreis Geilenkirchen-Heinsberg and all its offices were dissolved.
- With the exception of the municipality of Baesweiler, which became part of the Aachen district , the entire district became part of the new Heinsberg district .

coat of arms
The coat of arms shows the Jülich lion in the first quarter, which, like the parrot shown below , was taken from the coat of arms of the city of Geilenkirchen. The silver lion in the left half of the shield is the common figure of the town of Heinsberg. The right to use their own coat of arms was granted to the Selfkantkreis by a certificate from the state government dated March 1, 1950.
License Plate
On July 1, 1956, when the vehicle registration number was introduced, the GK was assigned to the then district . It was issued until December 31, 1971. It has been available in the Heinsberg district since September 2, 2013 due to the license plate liberalization .
