Effeld is a western district of the city of Wassenberg in the North Rhine-Westphalian district of Heinsberg , right on the border with the Netherlands in the Rur Valley.

location

Effelder Waldsee

To the east of the village lies the Effelder Forest, which is followed by the Ophovener Forest. At the northern exit of the village, in the direction of Vlodrop , Netherlands, is the Effelder Waldsee with an outdoor swimming pool and a campsite. The Schaagbach flows through Effeld and the Rur to the west of the village.

history

A Roman road ran from Effeld to Dalheim . 11 Germanic barrows with 19 funerary urns were discovered here. The moated castle Haus Neuerburg was demolished in the 19th century. On January 1, 1972, Effeld came to the municipality of Wassenberg on the basis of Section 31 of the Aachen Act .

Economy and Infrastructure

Effeld has a fire station and a community hall. An important branch of the economy is the cultivation of asparagus on the particularly suitable sandy soils of the Effelder district.

Attractions

The moated castle Haus Effeld is worth seeing . His manor house , which dates back to the 15th century, was given its current appearance during a renovation and extension in 1606. The brick building has richly curved gables on both narrow sides. Two three-storey square towers are placed across the corner of the main building at the corners of the building. On the side facing the bailey long side is centered a larger, square tower with an arched Renaissance - Portal .

In the Effelder Wald there is a long, clearly visible section of a Landwehr in the immediate vicinity and quite parallel to the (today's) border with the Netherlands . The Landwehr is said to date mainly from the 16th century.

The Herz-Jesu-Kirche , built in 1910, is the main parish church of the Catholic parish of St. Martinus Steinkirchen-Effeld.

traffic

The closest motorway junctions are Hückelhoven-West on the A 46 and, with regard to the Dutch motorway network, Roermond on the A73 .
