Former station building | Wassenberg Am Bahnhof map |
On the line from Düren to Dalheim , which was completed by the Prussian State Railways in 1911 , the Cologne Railway Directorate built a reception building. A two-story plastered building with a tile base and hipped roof was created. A gable was used asymmetrically. With the exception of the restaurant extension, the ground floor windows are round-arched, three-winged with a central bar and a skylight with cross bars. A wooden waiting hall was built in front of the track, the supports with headbands and the gable surfaces of the saddle roof boarded up. Because of its impact on the then young, up-and-coming industrial city, the station is important for the history of Wassenberg. Due to the rarity of the waiting hall that has been preserved, there are artistic, scientific and urban planning reasons for a public interest according to § 2 DSchG. | 1911 | Jan. 28, 1986 | 53

Former fire department store | Wassenberg Am Buir 13 map |
The two-storey four-axle house received three gate entrances on the ground floor. The ground floor is separated from the upper floor by a brick cornice. The arched gate entrances on the ground floor are framed by bead profile stones. The gates with the lily-shaped forged fittings are still in their original form and give the building the character typical of syringe houses. The parapets under the arched windows on the upper floor are designed as color-contrasting mirrors. The upper floor is divided in the middle by the fire brigade symbol, which is surrounded by shaped bricks. The arched house is currently the only known syringe house from the period after 1900 in the Heinsberg district that has largely been preserved. | around 1900 | Aug 28, 1988 | 69

Old Town Hall | Wassenberg Am Roßtor 1 card |
The town hall of Wassenberg is the reconstruction of the town hall from 1902, which was badly damaged in the war and which is based on the previous building from 1753. The town hall is in the old tradition of the Wassenberg town hall, but in the post-war redesign it occupies the space of the former town hall and two adjacent houses and thus closes as a four-wing complex around an inner courtyard, which has a gallery on the first floor. This town hall from post-war architecture closely based on its historical predecessor characterizes the Roßmarkt and the passage of Roermonder Straße through Wassenberg. The town hall is therefore an indispensable part of the ensemble in the city center of Wassenberg. | 1902 | Oct 13, 1987 | 63

Wassenberg Castle as a whole is a monument that is significant for human history and for the development of Wassenberg, and for which there are scientific and urban planning reasons for a public interest in its preservation and use. The castle is located within the city wall of Wassenberg in the northeast corner, on a steep hill. The complex has an almost square floor plan, at the highest point of which is the keep from the first half of the 15th century, as a smooth four-storey brick tower. Of the seven footfalls, only station 5 and station 1 (next to the Corsten house in Wassenberg) have been preserved. The pious custom of foot processions is said to have been preserved until 1910. The processions moved from Wassenberg via Birgelen to Birgelener Pützchen. The material is described as "Liedburger stone, sandstones and Roman sarcophagus parts".

Blaustein Hochkreuz | Orsbeck Ratheimer Strasse 61 map |
The multi-level bluestone high cross with cornices from the 19th century was given a late shell limestone cross, probably as a replacement for a cross that was part of the original inventory. At the intersection of the cross arms is the framed inscription “IHS” behind the head of the white painted body on cast metal, both of which stand for a time of origin from the twentieth century. The pointed arched figural niche with a decorated dome is emphasized by pilasters and palm branches above the pointed arch. In the base below there is an octagonal writing field. The corner sections are each filled with the image of a vine leaf.
The text says: “The cross is my sure salvation! I always venerate the cross The Lord's Cross be with me! The cross be my refuge! 300 days indulgence of Pius IX. 6/21/1874 " The decorative and inscription panels were subsequently processed and, in addition to traces of a blue paint finish, also show more recent grinding marks. |

Former basket maker workshop | Effeld Schleidstrasse 2 map |
The single-storey Winkelhof complex with a gable roof from the 19th century with two axes in each of the gable ends is one of the few surviving representatives of the basket or wooden shoemaker's cottages in the Heinsberg district. In the past, the Ruraue was the area in a circle that, due to the location of the wicker there, represented the center of basket weaving. In Heinsberg a school was even set up especially for this trade. The simple brick house is a monument as a whole and means for the history of Effeld and its residents as well as for their working and living conditions. The preservation of this object is in the public interest for scientific reasons, especially for reasons of local history. | 19th century | July 1, 1986 | 55

Jewish Cemetery | Wassenberg Roermonder Strasse map |
The origins of the small Jewish community of Wassenberg go back to the Middle Ages. Alexander von Wassenberg, who lived in Cologne, was one of the creditors of St. Andreas in 1321. Today's Wassenberger Stadtpark - a swampy forest landscape cultivated in the 19th century - was called Judenbruch from ancient times. It is possible that Vinzenz von Moers leased the area to the Wassenberg Jews for a lot of money in 1450. The term Judenbruch has been handed down since 1324. It is possible that the first Jewish burial place was located in the Judenbruch. The Jewish community of Wassenberg was always quite small and did not contain more than 40 people in the 19th century. The synagogue was built in 1867 and burned down in 1938. In 1688, the cemetery was laid out on Roermonder Straße, at that time still outside the city gates. The last burial probably took place in 1933, and the usual desecrations began in 1938 at the latest. In 1939 the community of Wassenberg acquired the cemetery and returned it to the Jewish Trust Corporation in 1953, with the exception of a remnant.
The cemetery is slightly elevated above the street and is enclosed by a small wall with portal pillars that frame an old iron gate with neo-Gothic motifs. Behind it you reach a lawn via several steps. the preserved tombstones are placed in two to three rows to the left of an imaginary central axis. There are 17 stones, some of which are from the 19th century. The most recent burial is probably that of Eva Heumann, who died February 10, 1933. In addition, a little apart from the gravestones there is a memorial stone for the city of Wassenberg (inscription "Friedhof der Jüdischen Gemeinde Wassenberg / Synagoge der Jewish Gemeinde Wassenberg, destroyed 10 November 1938") and a Grave / memorial stone that Walter Reis, who emigrated to Canada, was given in 1992 for his sister Betty and his grandparents Jacob u. Who were murdered in Bergen-Belsen. Johanna Hertz donates (sculptor: Ernst Brockschnieder), installed; Walter Reis' name was added after his death in 2005. The stone is in the shadow of a Canadian maple that grew on Walter Reis' property in Canada. The plot shows the location of the Wassenberg Jewish cemetery, which has been occupied since the 17th century, and its burials. It is important for Wassenberg. The character as a cemetery is appropriately designed and clearly preserved. The preservation of the parcel, the gravestones and the memorial stones as a cemetery and memorial site is in the public interest for scientific, local and cultural-historical reasons. |

Hochkreuz | Wassenberg Waldfriedhof Bergstrasse map |
Approx. 4 m high crucifixion group on a base, light artificial stone, inscribed on the reverse. dat. 1935, author unknown. The center is elevated with Christ on the cross, next to it standing figures of Mary and John; the portrayal of people in a manner typical of the time in idealistically exaggerated Raelism. Inscription made of filigree rounded capital letters on the front in the base: I AM THE RESURRECTION AND LIFE.
Significant for Wassenberg as a central historical component and crystallization point of the forest cemetery. It is one of the few elements in the cemetery that has survived from its history. Preservation is therefore in the public interest for scientific reasons, here for reasons of local history. |

Old chapel | Wassenberg Waldfriedhof Bergstrasse map |
Small two-story brick building on a right-angled floor plan, with a high, sideways towed gable roof. The basement level, which is sunk into the ground, has been left exposed to brick; on the back there is a round-arched opening that extends down to the floor; however, it is currently inaccessible. The masonry on the upper floor is colored with white sludge. In front, in the direction of the main entrance to the cemetery, there is a step system with cheek walls, also made of brick, through which the two-winged, arched entrance is reached. A lying oval ocular window is incorporated in the gable. The lateral towing of the roof is decorated with acroteria masonry in a typical form. The side walls are each opened with three small rectangular windows, a large round-arched stained glass window was made in the rear wall above the base opening. The ornamental tile floor inside the upper storey is also worth mentioning. The old chapel is dated around 1905. | 1905 | Nov 28, 2013 | 76

Priest's grave | Wassenberg Waldfriedhof Bergstrasse map |
Broadly mounted, wall-like stele, multiple tiered, dark artificial stone (?), Dated 1920s (?), Oldest date of death 24.11.1920 (Pastor Otto Jansen). In the middle there is a relief with the fallen Christ carrying the cross and above it small praying angels, underneath the inscription "HERE EXPECTED YOUR / PRIEST / YOUR RESURRECTION".
The grave site of seven pastors from St. Georg and St. Mariä Himmelfahrt (Upper Town) in Wassenberg, including Ludwig Hecker, first pastor of the St. Mary's Assumption parish, which was newly established after the Second World War, and Paul Spülbeck, who played a key role in the significant reconstruction of the St. Georg involved. Important for Wassenberg as a central historical component of the forest cemetery and illustration of the parish history. The people buried and remembered here represent an important piece of local history. The preservation of the tomb is therefore in the public interest for scientific and local historical reasons. |
