St. Lambertus is the Roman Catholic branch church of the Birgelen district of the city of Wassenberg in the Heinsberg district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

The church is registered under number 26 in the list of architectural monuments in Wassenberg .

history

The first church in Birgelen already existed around the year 750. This church is said to have been founded by St. Willibrord . In the 13th century, a new church, the Birgelener Bergkirche, was built on the same site. This church was in today's cemetery on the site of the neo-Gothic cemetery chapel and was demolished around 1867, despite efforts to preserve it.

As early as 1825 and 1827, today's church was built in the classicist style according to plans by the Aachen architect Johann Baptist Cremer . In the 1930s this became too small and an extension was necessary. Between 1935 and 1937, a large extension was finally built on the north side according to plans by the Bensberg architect Bernhard Rotterdam in the same architectural style as the old part. The extension building was consecrated on April 25, 1937.

The church was badly damaged in the Second World War , so that the interior looks very simple after the restoration between 1945 and 1947.

Since 2010 Birgelen is no longer an independent parish . It was merged with some other former parishes to form the new large parish of St. Marien Wassenberg.

Furnishing

There is modern equipment in the interior. Worth mentioning are the altar cross by Albert Sous from 1965 and the bronze Lambertus figure donated by Pastor Willi Steinrath . The organ has 23 registers and dates from 1955. The font was created in 1889. The windows were created by the glass painter Ludwig Schaffrath in 1965.
