St. Martin (Orsbeck)
St. Martin is the Roman Catholic branch church of the Orsbeck district of the city of Wassenberg in the Heinsberg district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).
The church is entered under number 44 in the list of architectural monuments in Wassenberg .
history
The oldest parts of the Orsbeck church date back to the 10th century. This makes the church the oldest church in the Heinsberg district. In the 12th century the bell tower was built in front of the Romanesque hall church in the west and increased by one storey in the 15th century. Around 1753 the nave was raised and a barrel vault was drawn in, which replaced a flat ceiling. In 1839 the Romanesque rectangular choir in the east was demolished because the church had become too small, and the nave was extended to the east. Since then the nave has closed with a semicircular apse .
Further structural changes were made in 1933. A transept was built directly at the choir according to plans by the architect Willy Weyres . This has turned the hall church into a cruciform church.
During the Second World War , the church was damaged between 1944 and 1945. This damage could be repaired by 1951. In 1970 the sacristy was increased by one floor and in 1977 and 1978 the tower and barrel vault were renovated.
Since January 1, 2010 Orsbeck is no longer an independent parish. It was merged with some other former parishes to form the parish of St. Marien Wassenberg.
Furnishing
In the interior there is a modernly designed chancel with a marble folk altar , an ambo and a tabernacle . Historical pieces of equipment are the baptismal font with a brass lid and brightly painted figures of saints.
