Birgelener Pützchen

The Birgelener Pützchen is a Marian pilgrimage chapel in the forest between the Wassenberger Oberstadt and Birgelen in the Heinsberg district .

The chapel with the Willibrordus fountain is located directly on the edge of the steep eastern slope of the Rur valley in the forest, guided by the Way of the Cross, which was built in 1910 . According to tradition, St. Willibrordus is said to have founded the mountain church in Birgelen around 705, which stood on the site of today's cemetery chapel. A first stone prayer house was built in 1795; and around 1850 the fountain (Pütz) was framed and a chapel was built over it. The main octagonal room of the chapel on the Pützchen was added in 1933 to the smaller, rectangular section of the building from 1863. The water in the Pützchen is considered to be beneficial and, thanks to its silicon dioxide content, is said to alleviate eye problems in particular.

The first documented pilgrimage took place in 1718. Since 1928, the Pützchen Sunday has been taking place at the chapel on the first Sunday in May.

In the tower is a hand operated bell. It strikes the tone es³ and can be rung with the help of a pole that is laid out and clamped to the rope.

As a result of a fire in early July 2009, the chapel and the altar were badly damaged. In the spring of 2010, the altar was restored and the fire damage to the building removed. After further damage, a beautiful wrought iron door grille was installed in summer 2010.
