The church is entered under number 4 in the list of architectural monuments in Wassenberg .

history

Around 1118 a new church was built in Wassenberg, which was consecrated on September 30, 1118 by the Liège bishop Otbert von Liège . The new building of the church was connected with the appointment to the parish church and the foundation of the monastery. This Romanesque hall church was extended after 1250 by two aisles to form a three-aisled pillar basilica . Around the year 1420, the three-storey bell tower , still preserved today, was built onto the nave in the Gothic style . In 1802 the Wassenberg Monastery, founded in 1118, was dissolved by the French.

During the Second World War , the church was completely destroyed except for the bell tower in 1944 and 1945. While retaining the tower, a new, modern three-aisled church on a parabolic floor plan was built between 1954 and 1956 according to plans by the Rheydter architect Alfons Leitl . The foundation stone was laid on December 26, 1954 and the consecration by Aachen Bishop Johannes Pohlschneider on November 21, 1956. At the same time as the consecration, the bishop granted the church the status of a provost church.

Since January 1st 2010, Wassenberg is no longer an independent parish. It was merged with some other former parishes to form the parish of St. Marien Wassenberg. St. George is the new parish church of this new parish.

Furnishing

There is modern equipment in the interior. Mention should be made of the wall paintings in the choir , as well as the organ from 1957 with 20 registers. It is a work of the Bonn company Johannes Klais Orgelbau . The windows were created by the artist Peter Thomas in 1957.
