Finds and old field names indicate Roman settlement around a ford through the Rur. Around 1911, early medieval graves from the 7th century were found east of the town center. The most remarkable find is a 5 cm large gold disc brooch, which was occasionally published erroneously under the name Wassenberg. Around the year 1000, a Franconian hall church was built and Martin von Tours was consecrated.
